After it dies see if you have spark or fuel injector spary. It could be your coil or pickup module inth dist. Check for fuel at the fuel rail. I have seen fuel pumps stop working once they got hot.

1989 wrangler 4.2 litre engine wont idle

my 1989 jeep wrangler would not idle and come to find out it was a little filter cloth inside the fuel tank that was on the end of the pickup tube going to the fuel filter. It was clogged up and when the engine was started it would just suck in and cut off fuel flow. My mechanic removed the filter cloth from the tube and the jeep runs great. It really does not need to be there because the fuel line has a filter on it. I hope this helps , I know for me it was very frustrating trying to figure this problem out.

1989 jeep wrangler starts jumping and backfiring

Start with the basics...meaning check the spark plug wires and spark plugs. While under the hood, inspect all hoses for a vacuum leak(s). Then turn the ignition key on-off-on-off- on...leave in the on position and write down the number of flashes the check engine light indicates....2 flashes = #2....pause.....3 flashes = #3.
Let start from here. Are you able to perform engine repairs or diagnostics???

I have a 1989 jeep cherokee. Engine runs fine when in park but as soon as you put it into gear it will die. Put it back in park and it will start right back up and run fine. Any ideas?

I would suggest checking for carbon build up around the throttle plate edges and back of throttle plate.it can be cleaned with throttle plate cleaner by CRC company and a old toothbrush.

Jeep starts sluggish and then wants to die

It is most likely from that actually. You may need to adjust the air / fuel mixture after modding the intake. Sounds like its getting too much air.

One possible explanation for this is that the crankshaft position sensor is going bad.

89 wrangler get warm won't idle the takes along time to restart

These jeeps are carbeurated, with heavy emissions systems forced down the throats of Jeep. There are insane Vacuum systems that are too complex to deal with. What I did, (I have the 4.2L) was go out and purchase the Weber kit. I am not selling the part for them, I am actually a happy owner. Mine would die every time I came to a stop. I swapped out the junk and popped in the Weber. I have had no carb problems what so ever. I even eliminated the messy vacuum system! I payed about 200 bucks on Ebay, but from Weber direct they cost around 300. Good luck!
