Question about 2002 Ford F350 Super Duty DRW Reg. Cab

Power steering quit and so did power brakes. Vacuum?

It started puking out from cap and whining. Was parked with wheels urned. Has the 7.3 turbo deisel. Has a pretty new pump.

Yea I worked for Ford and have seen this before. Your pump is cavatating. It has air somewhere in the system. Ford pumps are known for being noisy. To get the air out correctly you have to jack the front tires off the ground and while the engine is on turn the steering back and fourth with the cap of the pump. You need to get a small bottle of Fords Friction Modifier and put it in this pump after you get the air out. If your truck has Hydraboost steering then the hydraboost could have a bad seal init allowing the pressure to go backwards through the system. The Hydraboost system is easy to distinguish because it has hoses that go up and attach to the brake booster system. Some trucks came with these and some did not. Hope this helped.

How do you bleed the power steering on 2004 escape


CAUTION: If the air is not purged from the power steering system correctly, premature power steering pump failure can result. The condition can occur on pre-delivery vehicles with evidence of aerated fluid or on vehicles that have had steering component repairs.
  1. NOTE: A whine heard from the power steering pump can be caused by air in the system. The power steering purge procedure must be carried out prior to any component repair for which power steering noise complaints are accompanied by evidence of aerated fluid. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap. Check the fluid.
  1. Raise the front wheels off the floor. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
  1. Tightly insert the stopper of the vacuum pump into the reservoir.
  1. Start the engine.
  1. Install the vacuum pump, apply vacuum and maintain maximum vacuum of 68-85 kPa (20-25 in-Hg).
  1. CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for more than 3 to 5 seconds at a time. Damage to the power steering pump can occur. Cycle the steering wheel fully from stop to stop 10 times.
  1. Stop the engine.
  1. Release the vacuum and remove the vacuum pump.
  1. CAUTION: Do not overfill the reservoir. Fill the reservoir and install the reservoir cap.
  1. Visually inspect the power steering system for leaks.

Sounds like a vacuum leak or open air filter box. Check all vacuum hoses are in good condition and make sure air cleaner is closed properly.

Hello! There are power steering fluid in/out hoses but no vacuum lines...It sounds as if the pump needs to be bled of air or the belt is loose...Belt should move about 1/2 to 3/4"...Bleeding is as follows...

Yes, your brakes are boosted by the power steering pump rather than by vacuum. I don't think it's air in the system. More likely your pump has failed, but you can try bleeding the pump. Here is a procedure from autozone.com:

Observe the following:
Use clean, new power steering fluid type only Hoses touching the frame, body or engine may cause system noise. Verify that the hoses do not touch any other part of the vehicle. Loose connections may not leak, but could allow air into the steering system. Verify that all hose connections are tight.


NOTE Power steering fluid level must be maintained throughout bleed procedure.

  1. Fill pump reservoir with fluid to minimum system level, FULL COLD level, or middle of hash mark on cap stick fluid level indicator.

Whine usually occurs on tight turns maximising pump output and/or pump may be worn and needs replacement. Leakage can be from pump reservor,connection, or power rack and pinion steering assy. Spray off any area with a sign of fluid with a brake clean or carb. cleaner and look for signs of leakage.

My 2005 Buick LaCrosse makes a whiny noise. It is worse when going around corners. I notice when I take my foot off the gas the noise lessons significantly.


I am guessing the steering rack is starting to go bad. That is quite expensive to fix. The whining noise is the rack sucking air due to the steering fluid has leaked out. You can check your power steering fluid level and add some with stop leak to see if that helps. The filler cap is at the rear of the engine on the passenger side and is quite hard to get to. Be sure to not reach down to remove the cap unless the engine is cool. There is a high risk of burning yourself on the exhaust manifold.

The automatic (vacuum) release-type is standard equipment on all vehicles. The automatic vacuum-type parking brake system contains the following features:
  • A parking brake release control motor (2A843) with mounting bracket bolted to the parking brake control .
  • The vacuum-actuated diaphragm within the parking brake release control motor which is connected by a rod to the upper end of the parking brake release vacuum hose (2B653) .
  • The parking brake release vacuum hose which connects the parking brake release control motor to the engine manifold through a vacuum release switch at the steering column tube (3514) .
  • The parking brake release control motor which is actuated to release the parking brake whenever the engine is running and the transmission is in a forward-driving gear.
  • The automatic parking brake control which has a manual release feature that releases the foot parking brake control by applying force to the parking brake control pedal in the "apply" direction to the point of initial application.
  • The parking brake control will return to the full-release position after removing the force.
