Question about 2001 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Ford Thunderbird. Last night I was at the grocery store, came out, car started just fine, but I couldn't get it out of "park". The button on the side of the shifter (automatic) wouldn't go in. Then it did go in, and I drove it to another store. Same thing happened. I eventually got it in drive and drove home. I put it in park and the same thing happened - couldn't get it out of park and into drive (or reverse or anything). Then I noticed the "theft" light was blinking on the dash (I've never seen that before). I tried using the remote system and locked and unlcked the doors. I tried locking and unlocking the doors with the key. Today the theft light is still flashing when I turn the car on and the button on the shifter doesn't go in so I can put it in drive. Any suggestions? Thanks:)

Thanks:) After much research, and then having it towed to the garage, it seems to be the little button on the brake light. Brake light flashes when you press on the brake, but doesn't stay on.

Try dis connecting the negative side of your battery for 5 minutes. Hook the battery back up and see if the theft system reset itself. It has to be the negative side only. Hope this works.

Brake sensor. It tells transmission, brake is depressed and allows you to shift out of park. Or check with diagnostic computer, free at some major retailers. Most likely a sensor, if not transmission may be bad.

My 1997 ford thunderbird stalls, idles rough, backfires, and has trouble accelerating

it could be as simple as your spark plugs, they may need to be checked for proper gaping and also check to make sure plugs are installed properly, could also be your timing might be off, could also be the throttle position sensor, these could all be effecting the fuel to air ratio, I would start with the easiest problem 1st......hope this was of some use to you.....

Check transmission fluid. If full then sounds like electrical or internal transmission problem. Any check engine lights on? If so get codes pulled from vehicle computer.

U are going to have to pull the gas tank out and replace the fuel pump inside the tank, this is common when you run the gas completely out, the pump is cooled by the gas it runs in, if u run it low allot it burns out the pump bearings very quickly.
