I have same problem. I had HAYES repair manuel, which is not as good as CHILTON. It did not tell you anything about this problem. I called Saturn of Mesquite . The cap on top can be pried off with a very sharp pocket knife. ( You do not need $ 9 special device from auto part store) There is a Hexagon bolt under. Easy to come off. Under that is a washer that will not come off. It does not matter. The arm fits over a screw tha is part of spindle. You absolutely can not get this part off. SATURN OF MESQITE ,TX STATED IT IS PRESSED ON AT THE FACTORY. IT CAN NOT BE REMOVED EXCEPT BY A SPECIAL ( $ 350 TOOL ) THAT IS NOT SOLD AT AUTO PARTS STORES. ONLY THE SATURN MECHANICS HAVE IT. THE MECHANICS HAVE TO BUY THEIR OWN TOOLS TO WORK. THEY BUY FROM SPECIAL SATRUN AND NOT SOLD TO PUBLIC AT ALL.The mechanic was going to be nice and if I drove it in to Saturn he was going to use the tool to take it off for me. I could not drive it in ( inspection went out last month.) He states that if you try any other way you risk cracking windshield, bending the metal part of window wiper mechanical parts under plastic shield, break shield or crack this part and break it. HE DID SAY THIS COULD BE DONE BUT RISKS ABOVE WERE HIGHLY POSSIBLE. He stated get a vey big screw dirver. Very big like you would work on a 18 wheeler etc. put it side ways on side of bar that looks like screw, this is spindle. You will see wiper arm, spindle going throgh it, on top looks like screw / at bottom is another black plastic looking round area. Put screw drive sideways next go spindle. It will rest on black below and support wiper arm. Hold very firm so it doesn not move when you hit is with a hammer. Take hammer and hit top of screw. the spindle will be knocked down and the wiper arm will stay put because of the screw driver metal holding it where it is. If needed hit more than once. The spindle will move down and the arm wil stay where it is. The arm can be lifted off. When you try to get everything in place you will see how easy it is to break windshield, plastic cowl, or metal bars below. Good Luck.

Wipers don't grip rear window

Wiper arms are much neglected for a part that does such hard work. There are 3 main parts, the rubber, the rubber holder which is actually also a sort of spring, and then the arm with its strong spring.

Try replacing the rubber and holder as an assembly which clips onto the end of the arm. This is the most cost-efficient maintenance you can do, and should make a big difference.

The arm and spring can be replaced by undoing a nut under the cover at the top of the wiper arm spindle, but this is far less often needed.

Where is the wiper motor located and is it easy to install for an aver. guy with some handy skills

it should be located under the plastic panel which the wiper spindles come through! by spindles i mean the things the wiper arms are bolted on to, is it a big job? not bad take note of position wipers are in before removing them as it is essential to put them back in the same position,

I can't figure out how to change the rear wiper of our 2008 Hyundai Entourage. I've tried to get the old one off, and have also checked the owner's manual. It only shows directions for the front wipers.

hi thanks for reply if you are replacing the complete arm and its wiper blade ? then where the bottom of arm fits to w/motor drive spindle it is covered with a plastic cover which lifts and pulls off to reveal the nut and washer that secures arm to spindle ? the spindle is multi splined if you remove nut/washer with gentle pursuasion you can lift arm off splines ?by rocking the arm close to spindle however there is a wiper arm removal tool costs a couple of £s and is easy to use and pulls arm off splines no problem most auto shops sell them in uk or if you look on e bay at garage tools/equipment then you can get cheaper as i have bought two one to lend out to freinds and my own personal one they are good investment ! hope this helps

Driver side wiper does not move; passenger side wiper crosses over it

In view of the answer from jchaffcom I feel that if there is a Hex on the end of the Wiper Arm the Hex Nut needs Tightened. I have a 2004 Silverado and this is what happened to it. Simply tightening the Nut solved my problem. Try it and get back to me with the results whether good or bad.

Wiper arm problem.

have you removed the cover and nut from the spindle. If so, lift the blade up from the screen until it locks facing out from screen. Now with one hand on the spindle and the other grasping the arm about 8" fron spindle gently rock the arm from side to side. This should free the arm which is on a taper.

96 safari rear wiper arm removal

Wiper arms are fitted to a tapered and splined shaft and they can become very tight on the shaft even without the problems of poor maintenance - when servicing a vehicle I always loosen the wiper arm retaining nuts and apply a small amount of chain lube and retighten. Subsequent removal becomes a little easier and the chance of snapping a wiper spindle much reduced.

These days few wiper arms can be removed without using a small gear puller that is sold by tool outlets for the purpose of removing most wiper arms. Recently a colleague needed to manufacture a "special" for a particular car because mine wouldn't fit.

Rear wipers receive no maintenance at all generally and being more exposed to the weather, salt, road dirt, corrosion can be a big factor when removing the arm from the spindle. This is especially so when the rear wiper arm is plastic with a moulded-in ally hub. I have in the past had to resort to carefully cutting and grinding away the arm in order not to risk the spindle or the glass.

I suggest you try a wiper arm puller and a little gentle heat and if that doesn't seem to be working then cutting, grinding or drilling would be the best solution, after protecting the glass with lots of forgiving material...
