Why would the fuse to fuel pump burn when i try to start my 98 ford ranger

Short to ground, or short to the positive side of the starter solenoid between solenoid and Starter positive lead. "electricity follows the path of least resistance". See if you an run a tempory positive from battery to the fuel pump (after disconecting fuel pump and it will run. Or if you have an ohm meter check the resistance between ground and it's positive terminal disconnected from it's power lead. If it shows no resistance there is an internal short to grown and thus blowing fuse. If shows some resistance, it should be good. Measure resistance of the positive lead to the fuel pump still disconnected and ground. If zero, that lead is pinched and grounded to the frame thus blowing fuse. This lead connects to what is known as fuel pump relay. That may be the problem too. Good luck.

Code p0171 on 98 ford ranger

Well code 171 means the O2 sensor is telling the computer the fuel mixture is too lean and the computer can not make it go rich by increasing on time for the injectors.
The problem could be the O2 sensor, or low fuel pressure, or several other factors.

I have a 98 ford ranger that will not start. i can spray starting fluid in it and it will run untill that is burned up and the accelartion isnt very good kinda of sluggish

Start by replacing the fuel filter as it obviously isn't getting enough fuel or air so also replace the air filter if it hasn't been replaced for some time. Another possible cause is that the fuel pump may need replaced. The pump will be inside the fuel tank.

Unable to locate the inertia pump on 98 ford ranger

Your vehicle has an inertia switch, which is located on the tow board to the right of the transmission pump. Usually the fuel pump does not shut off except in the case of an accident but you can check it anyway. Being fuel injected, your fuel pump is probably in the gas tank and if there is no power to the wires coming out of the tank, you probably have a bad fuel pump

check for fuel, fuel pump could be getting hot then shutting off,
could be fuel pump relay, could be coil, computer, etc just a couple places for you to start

No fuel

You may have put the filter on backwards. If you did I might have ruined the fuel pump. Whether or not you did, test the wires that run to the pump. If they are getting power, you need to replace the pump. If not, start checking fuses and relays.

91 ranger fuel pump will not turn off

it sounds like the ing has gone bad you can bypass it as long as you wire it in on a wire that is hot during start an during normal run
