Question about 2005 Ford F-150
I would say the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) solenoid is causing you a problem.
The 04-06 MY trucks have a TSB on the IWE solenoid, where water can be ingested into the vacuum lines to the IWEs.
Operationally vacuum holds the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) out, and once vac is removed the spring engages the IWE.
If you are having an issue with the vacuum being released when shifting into 4WD, this could be the lag from switch to lock in, or it could be a plugged vent line from the IWE vacuum shut off by IWE solenoid, but nowhere to vent to ).
The grinding after shifting back into 2H could be the IWE solenoid not pulling the IWE gears back out ( the grinding noise is part of the TSB ).
Could also be a problem with the IWE itself, if the same side is not shifting into locked position, and back out ( getting held up on something ?? )
This is a block diagram of the IWE vacuum system.
