I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 and it will start and it will idle but as soon as i put it in gear it will stall.but crank back up. it acts like it is starving for gas like the converter is stoped up but has a new one on it.wondering what the problem is i think it could be the asd rely switch or fuel pump.

Torque Converter Solenoid. Not that I know that, but if the trans isn't loading the engine, then you look at all the other computer inputs that happen when you put it drive or reverse. Shift position senor or whatever it's called on yours, may have to be in a gear selection position or it shuts down.

Fuel pressure should read about 45 PSI which could be checked at the test port (looks like a tire valve) on the fuel rail over the injectors. If you use a tire gauge, it will fill the gauge with fuel and cause the rubber parts inside to fail. If pressure is down, replace the fuel filter first, then the fuel pump if no help from the filter. If the check engine light is on, rent a scanner and read out any fault codes, which will lead to a repair.

1996 Doge Ram 1500 5.2 liter, wont start or starts & quits as soon as you put it in gear.

Low idle? Could be a crank position sensor. Let it warm up and try again, then its most likely the idle air control (IAC) actuator/valve. Do some regular maintenance. Start with fuel filter, then distributor cap and rotor, and spark plugs. Most likely just needs a fuel filter, should be on the frame rail, if not then its in the tank and I would start with the other stuff because removing the tank sucks.

There are two other sensors that may be causing problems. One being the crank position sensor and the other being the Oxygen sensors.

Will not stay running at idle (stalls)

There should be an AIS automatic idle speed motor mounted on the side of your throttle body across from or near your throttle linkage, or in that area. Usually held on with 2 torx screws. That regulates your idle up & down as needed depending on load situations on the engine, so that it doesn't stall out. Quite often they get gummed up or become defective and cause stalling. Before spending money on parts etc, (by the way, I'm told autozone will scan it free of charge for codes) I would get a spray can of throttle body cleaner, remove the AIS motor & clean the plunger & tip real good, and also spray some cleaner into the port that you removed it from, rub a little vaseline on the "O" ring at the seal of AIS motor before you re-install, and put it back in, tighten up the screws & give it a try. If it cures it great, but if it acts same shortly after running good for a while, buy new & replace. A lot of the time, this thing does not show a fault code in the computer, so it gets overlooked. Keep us posted
