Hello, usually when gas sets in carb for a long time it turns into a varnish, you will have to take carb apart and clean all jets out, even the fuel pump may be clogged up, you will probably have to rebuild carb, unless you have access to air line to blow any and all jets, pretty much all passage ways, power jets, in other words you have a carb problem, you may need a new one, unless you have a strong solvent, that will break away any varnish or gum up.

This is true, Get a can of seafoam then take the carb apart, put all parts into a big bowl then pour the can of seafoam into the bowl, May take two cans of seafoam to cover all parts in liquid, Let this set for two or three days, Then with air blow all passages out, Be sure the get all of them, Then put everything back together with a new rebuild kit and you have a new rebuilt carb.. I have done this without a rebuild kit but you have to be careful with the old gaskets.

The carb is probably all gummed up too from the old fuel. Only a complete cleaning/rebuild will change this.

83 ford mustang sat for two years now won't start

The fuel system is most likely gummed up from bad gasoline, flush the entire system, replace the fuel pump and the filter as well. Add a can of CHEMTOOL to the gas tank to help dissolve the varnish.

My toyota 4-runner sat for 3 yrs and now it turns over and wants to start but won't what may be the problem

If it sat for 3 yrs without starting then chances are it is the fuel. I belive most of the older toyotas had a drain on the gas tank, I would reccomend draining the gas and replacing the fuel filter to start with, just keep in mind that if it has an electric fuel pump there is a good possibility that it has gone bad from sitting. P.S. if there is no drain and you can't get the fuel pump to work and pump out all the old gas then I would suggest getting a universal fuel pump to remove all the old gas, or you can try to syphon the gas out and is a pain. Hope this helps you out, if you have any more questions then add a comment and I will get back to you.

Since is sat so long, whatever fuel was in the tank has probably gone "sour". Old gasoline gets an unpleasant "varnish" smell to it. The only certain way to remove any bad fuel is to drain the tank, and by all means change the fuel filter again.
Another thing that happens when a vehicle sits a very long time is that condensation in the tank causes water in the fuel. One or two cans of "dry gas" along with a full tank of fresh gas can often take care of this.
The easiest way to drain the fuel tank is by disconnecting the fuel line under the hood, connecting a hose to it, place the hose in a gasoline can, and turn the key two clicks to "ON" (NOT START!) so the fuel pump does the work for you.

If it sat for 3 years the fuel may be in pretty tough shape. If he gasoline smells like a can of old varnish or turpentine then it may have gummed up either the fuel pump, injectors or both. I would start by testing the fuel pressure with a gauge first to see if it is actually pumping enough fuel to run the engine. If the fuel smells bad or your pump isn't working you may need to have the fuel tank removed and cleaned and the fuel lines flushed to get all the old gunky fuel out of them. Also check to be sure you actually have spark at the plugs so you'll know if the ignition system is still working.

The age 1986 warrants a fuel pump replacement. Check for rodent damage in the fuel tank harness area when you install new pump. Also change the fuel filter.

Car sat 3 years, tried to start. Had to replace fuel filter, still not getting fuel.

Did you check to make sure fuel is getting as far as the filter? Detach the fuel line at the filter and have someone crank the engine. If fuel doesn't get to the end of the line you've got a clog somewhere else or there's a break in the fuel line.

How do you drain the fuel tank of a 98 ford f250

If you do plan on replacing the fuel filter, just take the filter off and see if you can just run the fuel pump and catch the fuel in a gas can.
