Question about 1997 Lincoln Town Car

I've already requested info and received your answer regarding my air suspension to which there is no easy fix. I must now take it to a repair shop. Is there one you would recommend in either Vero Beach or Ft Pierce, FL? I know the Ford dealer is considerably more than many other and money is getting tight.

Hello, you might be able find good used parts at junkyard, lots of people that works at them has a great knowledge of repairing them, since they probably pull these parts all the time, and wouldnt charge full price, long as you buy the parts from them, could ask for the part and see what they would charge to put on. ford probably charges 50.00 to 100.00 an hour, and most dealers has a set time for their mech, to fix things, usually, in their books or on paper, they may have a flat 4 hours to fix problem, even if it takes 2 hours to fix, their still going to charge you for that 4 hours, i had this problem with chev place were i live

What is wrong with the air suspension on my town car?

The movement is caused by a loose suspension. Deflated parts will not control body roll and without cushion suspension parts can be bent.

Having to replace only a defective broken part is cheaper than guessing. The air suspension has a diagnostic feature which can pinpoint bad components. A high end diagnostic scanner can hook up to the suspension and tell you what needs replacing.

If only a component needs replacing the cost can be low. Even the air bags can be patched or some will interface with cheaper Ford air suspension. But if things are too expensive some people replace the suspension with regular coil springs. You lose a lot, load leveling and superior ride.

Hi Robert, just finished reading the answers you've already received and your questions. Yes the split intake ducting can and probably will cause a bad misfire. The air flow sensor is, if memory serves correctly, in front of the damaged area. That means that the information concerning the volume of air fed into the combustion chambers will be incorrect. This in turn means the ECU is receiving the wrong information and causing an incorrect amount of fuel to be injected. Regards John

How to disable SLS and or height sensor alarm?

These are the types of problems that are caused when modifications are made to a vehicle - especially the newer models where everything is computer-controlled and several computers in the vehicle are networked together and share information with each other. Disabling one will make the next one start sounding the alarm, turning on warning lamps or and/or setting fault codes.

The only recommendation that I have is this:

If you do not want to have to REPAIR an air suspension system, DO NOT BUY a vehicle that is equipped with air suspension.
If you already own a vehicle equipped with air suspension and it breaks, either repair it properly, or trade the vehicle off. You probably cannot even GIVE the vehicle away once modifications are attempted. NOBODY will want it.

Making modifications in an attempt to get around making proper repairs usually CAUSES more problems than it fixes.

Rear air suspension

Since your question is general in nature it is difficult to provide a hands on answer. I can tell you that in my experience (3 vehicles with air suspension systems) all air suspension systems eventually have problems. Often it is the air pump that goes out due to condensation which causes the bearings to fail; or it is the automatic leveling componant. Rarely do the air shocks fail- but it can happen. I recently found and entire air shock system on eBay for my truck which was 1/2 the price of what a dealer would charge ($600 V $1300).

If you can't fix the system yourself you are at the mercy of the repair shops. If you can, shop around for the parts if you know what is needed. I found that it was still less expensive to purchase the entire kit on line than just having the system repaired at a shop. And of course, you would have a new system. Think about it.!

Need to get the vehicle scanned for fault codes.
The most common issue is the air pump/compressor for the electronic air suspension.
Relatively easy to replace, but you still need to get the vehicle scanned for fault codes. Once the fault has been repaired, again you will need to get the faults cleared.
No really a DIY repair im afraid.

Air suspention lights on battery is dead how to fix it

You have a problem in the air suspension. There are several options for fixing this. The system has a diagnostic plug which can quickly and easily indicate what part is bad.
The dealer will have the tools, you will have to ask anywhere else you want to go if they have the diagnostic tool.

If you turn off the air suspension switch in the trunk you can charge the battery and it should stay charged.
You can start the car and then switch the suspension on to get to a repair shop. For that matter, you can turn off the air suspension each time you park your car to save your battery.

You will damage the metal parts in the suspension if you drive the car without the air pump turned on. The problem may be 1 simple switch or something bigger. There are places which patch or recondition the rubber bags if that is the problem.

I usually recommend Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan but not all have the suspension tester. They also could not repair it for you but may have the parts.

Lincoln navigator air suspension is all the way down

that should not happen. Did you turn the switch off in the back for the suspension? Did you do something else at the same time, like check the spare tire for air pressure?

I have info on 2003 navigator 4 wheel air suspension. Maybe similar

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Vehicle Dynamic Suspension The four wheel air suspension system is comprised of the following components:
  • service switch
  • control module
  • two front height sensors
  • one rear height sensor
  • compressor and drier assembly (includes vent solenoid)
  • air lines
  • front and rear air spring and shock absorber assemblies
  • four air spring solenoids
WARNING: The service switch for the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the jack storage area in the rear of the passenger compartment. Failure to do so may result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs which may result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations.

WARNING: Do not remove an air spring under any circumstances when there is pressure in the air spring. Do not remove any components supporting an air spring without either exhausting the air or providing support for the air spring to prevent vehicle damage or personal injury.

Principles of Operation
The 4-wheel air suspension (4WAS) module commands changes in vehicle height that are necessary for both the load leveling and the vertical height adjustment features.
The 4WAS load leveling feature automatically makes adjustments in vehicle height so that the vehicle is always at trim height, and that constant front-to-rear vehicle attitudes are maintained over the load range of the vehicle. Adjustments in height that are necessary to correct height differences between the vehicle left and right sides for the 4WAS system are restricted to what can be reliably achieved with three height sensors.
The height adjustment feature has three vehicle heights within a two-inch span:
Kneel height — improves the ease of entering and exiting by lowering the vehicle one inch below the trim height in the front and rear when the vehicle ignition is in the OFF or LOCK positions and the vehicle is stationary.
Trim height — normal vehicle ride position; vehicle moves to trim position when the ignition is ON, when the transmission is initially shifted to DRIVE or REVERSE mode, when all doors are closed or when speed of more than 24 km/h (15 mph) is detected.
Off-road height — improves ground clearance by raising the vehicle one inch above trim height in the front and rear when the vehicle is at 4x4 low modes and the vehicle speed is less than 40 km/h (25 mph).
The 4WAS module uses the universal bus protocol, (UBP), module communications network for sending and receiving various signals with the exception of speed, information from the three height sensors, and the air suspension service switch. For additional information about UBP, refer to Section 418-00 .
The 4WAS system holds vehicle height when any door or rear hatch is opened. The system stores front and rear vehicle height the moment any door is detected open. The system then maintains this height regardless of the addition or removal of a load. The system returns to its commanded height when all doors are closed or vehicle speed exceeds 24 km/h (15 mph).

Air Suspension Service Switch
The air suspension service switch signal is needed to wake up the 4WAS module. Without the module receiving this signal, the 4WAS system is inoperative at speeds below 24 km/h (15 mph) and will not react when the vehicle is raised or lowered. At speeds above 24 km/h (15 mph), the system will be active as if the air suspension service switch is in the ON position.
Vehicles without message center When the air suspension service switch is in the OFF position and the ignition switch is in the RUN position, a "CHECK SUSP" will appear in the RH corner of the instrument cluster.
Vehicles with message center When the air suspension service switch is in the OFF position and the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the message center will display "SUSPENSION SWITCHED OFF"
Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. NOTE: If the door ajar indicator is illuminated when all doors, liftgate, and liftgate glass are closed, the air suspension will not work correctly. Repair door ajar indicator; refer to Section 413-01 .
    Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.
