Question about 2004 Ford F150
Engine has had a constant ticking that i thought was a bearing in the idler pulley. i changed the pulley and did not fix the problem. recently became a very loud ticking like metal on metal. was thinking it may be a lifter but mechanic said when they cranked it black smoke was coming out of exhaust so possibly threw a rod. the only problem wit that scenario is that i never heard a loud noise. i pulled up to a light and as i pulled away the truck didnt respond well when i hit the accelerator. drastic loss in power and knocking and the rpms fizzled down untill the engine died. i crank up and slowly dies? please give an opinion of what you think it could possibly be.
Throttle Position Sensor and NO you do not have to go to Ford and replace the whole Assy. The auto part stores have the sensor for about $70 and less on Amazon. The black smoke was unburnt fuel most likely from all the cranking and confused PCM and its imputs trying to determine fuel stratagy. Those noises are something you work on after you get the engine performance fixed. Don't throw parts at it. The TPS is just one possible cause, now you need to look for codes and then test for bad sensors etc. Codes alone don't tell you a part is bad. Code are set based on computer inputs out of range over a number of drive cycles or not seeing what a PCM should see while cranking.
