Question about 2006 Ford F-150

Mechanic says there is too much play in my drive shaft and thats why im getting oil leaks he says he may have to rebuild the rear end

Most likely the Rear Crush seal has worn out he will have to replace the crush sleeve the seal an add a speedy sleeve to the york and re-rest the depth of the third member gear and replace oil so yep pretty much he ill have to come close to rebuilding it.

    A note The spider gears should be OK have him show you a sample of the oil before he pulls it apart, if thee is no metal flake in the oil then the crush seal is all you may need, he will have to check the depth with Pershing blue dye to make sure the teeth are centered in the ring gear or it will brake the teeth which is not a good thing but should not cost more than $150.00 Be sure to have him ad synthetic oil so that it will last much longer. And give you better fuel economy and make it less noisy.

    Wanted to add once you break the nut loose off the pinion you have to always replace the crush seal. and it may only need the front seal and speedy sleave, I thought my answer might of been slightly off.

The pinion gear may be bad if your leak is very excessive. If the leak is more than the size of a quarter the pinion is egged out of round. You may find a machinist that can round it out and install a sleeve to stop the leak. It will be the cheapest way to go if you can remove your old one

How much crankshaft end play should there be?


Virtually none. If you have significant crankshaft end play, and you are not leaking oil, don't worry about it. If you are leaking oil from the rear main seal or from the pulley seal, consider rebuilding or replacing your engine before it seizes.
Recommendation: DRIVE IT 'TIL IT DIES. Replacement engines for your vehicle are abundant and not particularly expensive.

Gear oil leaking from rear of drive shaft


You need to replace the seal for the pinion. ou need to remove the drive shaft off the pinion yoke thene you will find a big nut in the center of the yoke that has to be removed but before you remove the nut check to see if there is any kind of play on the yoke if there is play the pinion bearing will have to be replaced if that is the case your better off having a mechanic do the job. If there is no play remove the nut pull the yoke off replace the seal and reinstall in reverse order.

Oil leaking from engine 1994 corolla


This could be run out or end play on the shaft. That would mean replace the bearings. IT would also be seal has worn a grove in the shaft. If it is worn, flame spray can be used to rebuild the shaft. IT would be cheaper than a new crank.

I have an oil leak at the end of the front driveline


when u say drive line do you mean the drive shaft for front axle and what side transfercase side or axle side and how bad a oil leak as it's normal for a slight wet look to be around the transfercase side shaft exit as this is all a "Wet" system and will seep a bit as things get lubed by oil in use , now if it leaves a puddle on ground thats too much and you should have it ck'd by a trusted mechanic (don't allow transfer case to go "dry") that would be expensive to fix then

1998 sprinter oil leak?


Hi Perry, check rear main oil seal,where engine and transmission are connected,valve cover could be leaking,look at engine area for fresh oil leaks and follow,if you see none at top,climb under with flashlight and seek and follow,check by oil filter and oil pressure switch.

1993 Chevy w/t 1500 rear end is leaking by drive shaft


The rear end seal.first block the wheels,so truck does not roll away.remove drive shaft four bolts to do this.might have to a pry bar to seperate .then take a center punch and make a mark on the nut.then mark the yoke.with a mark.this is done,so when its put back together,you dont over tightn the crush spacer.then remove the yoke.have a pan under neath to catch any rear end oil.remove yoke,then remove seal.reinstall seal,and reverse the process.hope this helped brad

My chevy truck is making a clonking noise in the rear end either wheel or im thinking drive shaft when i hit the gas on take off and while im doing like 50 mph what is it


drive shaft u-joints will make clanking sound putting in gear or have bad vibration to it . it can be pion bearing in rear-end it will do what you are saying . but check driveshaft , sometimes you can see if drive shaft has play in it move side to side .

After I turn off my car, there is a loud sound like a motor running under the car. Is this from the compressor for the air suspension? I also get a roaring noise when I am driving that comes from the rear...


Then noise you hear after shutting off the car very well might be the air suspension compressor. The air ride system is still activated for a half hour after the vehicle has been shut off. The roaring noise from the rear could be a bad bearing. The rear axle seals don't always leak when a bearing goes out. So it's not a conclusive indication that they are good just because the seals aren't leaking. If your mechanic isn't too versed in differentials it may be advisable to seek an opinion of a reputable transmission shop (however, that may be a difficult task).

Rear Differential


The mechanic is right, you should fix it before the differential back there either locks up or strips teeth, in either case you will be stranded. Probably your best bet is to check out a used, complete rear end, and install it. One major precaution if you go this way, you must replace yours with the exact same ratio. There should be a tag under one of the cover bolts which will show your ratio. He is also right about rebuilding with new parts, and in addition to cost of parts, is hard to find someone who is qualified to set it up once repairs are made. Rebuilding rear ends requires special training, and many mechanics do not have it.

Oil leaking..


Sounds like your oil leak is finding hot exhaust manifold and smoking/smelling. Make sure the oil filler caps and breather hoses that connect to the valve cover (Top of Engine) are attached securely. Try and determine exactly where the oil leak originates [Valve covers - top side, oil pan - underneath, or shaft seals - front and rear of engine, or left and right ends with the sideways (transverse) engine mounting]. Also check oil level - a blown head gasket or cracked head or block could lose coolant into the oil reservoir, causing an overfilled and thus leaking situation... this will show up as a creamy looking substance on the dipstick. If the engine is not making any other signs of abnormality, strange knocks or clicks, overheating, or losing gross amounts of fluids, make sure it has enough oil in the crankcase and drive it to a reputable mechanic for a true evaluation of the problem.
