I have a 2003 mazda protege. this is the third time my check engine light has come on. the first time the car started to shake when i stopped at a light and the check engine light came on. i had a readout done and it said misfire. i took it to a garage and they changed my spark plugs and wires. 2 weeks later it came on again and my car started to shake whenever i stopped. readout said misfire. they fixed the coils. it has been 2 weeks since then and my car started shaking again whenever i stop and the light came on. what could possibly be wrong with it?

A flashing check engine light indicates a engine missfire that will damage your catalytic converter, See owners manual.

Your catalytic converter might be plugged, if you smell a stink that reminds you of rotten eggs good chance that's what is wrong. If not that it could be the pcm power control module.

Look at the gas tank filler cap. Make sure the seal in the cap is good. If it is cracked it may be leaking air into the system. Simply replacing the cap usually fixes this problem

Blinking oil light on 2003 Mazda Protege. Changed oil and oil filter as well as oil sensor. Light still blinks when the car is idled up.

You need to reset your change oil warning light. To do this, turn the ignition key to on but do not turn over the engine. Then rapidly push down the gas pedal three times. This will reset the system and turn off the blinking light. Then when you drive another 3000 miles, that light will once again tell you it is time to have your oil changed. J.

Usually the rotten egg smell is a clogged CAT. Is the engine light on and if so did you retrieve any codes?

I have a 2003 Mazda protege 5. check engine light no codes

Remove the wire from the negative terminal on the battery and wait a few minutes, then reconnect the wire. This will "reset" the computer and remove the check engine light. If the light comes back on, take it to a Mazda service center and let them read the code. They will be able to tell you what is wrong. My check engine light is flashing i have a 2000 mazda protege lx I checked the obd and three codes popped up it said the engine is too lean so I put in premium gas and that helped the shaking and i put in...

Lean condition in fuel injected engine's are caused but a faulty MAF sensor, or it's dirty. Try cleaning the MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner which you can buy at most auto part stores. Just follow the instructions on the spray can and also add a bottle of fuel injector cleaner to your gas. This should help and the misfiring could be cause by the lean condition of your engine which should stop as soon as the lean condition is addressed.
Thank you for using Fixya and good luck

2001 mazda protege battery overheating - bad smell....., not catalytic converter . 1.6l.

You need to get the alternator output checked. If you can smell something like rotten eggs then what you are smelling is hydrogen gas which is explosive !! Batteries get hot and smell because the alternator is charging at too high a level. Check the output with a multimeter across the battery with the engine running. If it reads higher then 14.4 volts, its the alternator and you need to fix it as overcharging of your battery will cause total failure (if it has not already screwed your battery)..

Engine light

The "rotten-egg" smell is caused indirectly by the catalytic converter. The main cause is a rich mixture condition from the engine. Your SUV is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system. You can scan your computer for fault or error codes. The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components. There is an alternate reason for the rotten egg smell. this also can be caused by a over charged battery. if so, make sure the alternator isn't overcharging the battery cell. it will boil the contents causing the egg smell. I recommend a diagnostic run to make sure what this problem is.

please rate and god bless.
