I have a 1990 SL500 32V does not run properly we have change all ignition parts engine hunts on tick over, aceleration is hesitate when applied anyone got any ideas

Check out your Thermal vacuum tree and your Thermostat. The scanner may be blaming the part when in fact the part does not have vacuum until the engine reaches a certain temperature. A weak Thermostat will prevent the engine from changing the Ignition timing quickly.

Some of the engines used water temperature as part of the choke system. The Thermal vacuum tree would route the vacuum to different dashpots and solenoids. Not only would cold temperatures activate RPM increases, but separate dashpots would trip when the engine was hot enough to run without the choke stepup and drop the RPM down to curb idle.

This made choke settings hard to set because it took so long to cool down the block to make further adjustments. The Ignition advance was regulated by water temperature so the stalling and spitting back is from retarded timing.

Remember to use your scanner to wipe the memory clean after each repair. Look for the Vacuum routing label under the hood to make sure the hoses are correct.

I wish to adjust the idle tickover speed a wee bit on a 2007 Ford Transit 2.2 Duratorq engine. It is currenlty ticking over at approx 800 rpm and is hunting at this rev. If I could raise it a wee as I do...


First ensure that the throttle interior is really clean, a surface layer of grime can upset the ECU's ability to meter and govern the air entering the engine. If the throttle body interior is found to be really oily and dirty check on the idle air control valve and make sure that it too is cleaned up. Next put the ignition switch in position 2 (on, but no start) and depress the accelerator fully and release. If there is an issue with the throttle position sensor this procedure can help the ECU relocate the throttle plate position. Start the engine and if it is still hunting locate the air mass meter (AMM) on the air ducting immediately next to the air filter and disconnect the electrical connection. Does this remove the hunting aspect?... the rev speed might change but for the moment concentrate on the evenness of the tick-over. If the idle is even when the AMM is disconnected but hunts when connected then look at replacing your AMM. Try spraying the AMM with no residue electrical cleaning spray to see if this improves matters.

Bad switch or someone has bypassed the switch, should shut off when you turn ignition switch off, my 94 does. HUNT

Engine runs fast on start up (2000)rpm. when temp rises the engine hunts down and up from 2000rpm. no tick over


This is normal sometimes when it is cold. However, you should let the engine to run for ~ 2 minutes before you drive away...it will dissappear.

If the RPM's fluxuates at an idle at all times you have a bad spark plug or a bad spark plug wire

I would go for the starter motor personally first, as thats the part that cranks the engine over :)

that gets power, then it starts turning the flywheel, the starter motor also keeps the engine running inbetween the engines power strokes while its running.

Engine knocking


Hi,
Good news is - I don't think you need a new engine.

As there are many moving parts that could create a knocking sound, it usually needs careful inspection to identify where it is from.
I will give a list of some of the causes and remedies. Yours will probably be one of them, but unless I was there - it could be any.

Loose exhaust component (causes rattles and thumps) - replace parts or joints.
Loose Engine mounts - Engine will move about a lot more than normal - Replacement of mounts.
Fraying Belts - causes continual ticking or slapping - Replace belts and check tension.
Timing is off - bad running, lack of power, pre ignition or knocking at low revs. Check timing belt - Replace, Tune engine.
Cracked valve - slight misfire worse at low revs - Replacement valves.
Clutch Problems - Broken spring or loose bolt - Check clutch plate - replace clutch plates.
Older engines - often accompanying smoke -
Broken Piston ring - continual ticking or occasional misfire - Replace Piston rings
Worn Piston bearings - Piston Slap - Replacement of all piston bearings.

Transmission Problems (only heard when in gear or with clutch out) - Broken gear teeth or worn bearings - Replacement of Transmission or rebuild.

Some of these remedies require engine removal and strip down, others are a simpler fix.
