Here's an article that may be helpful. Not sure of the bolt size, I'd just put a few sockets on and see what fits best.

When my 2001 dodge stratus is cold and warms up the temperature gauge goes all the up too extreme hot then eventually comes down to normal. Is this a bad thermostat?

It sounds like a possible "sticking" thermostat.
I'd maybe flush the system and replace the thermostat just to be safe.
The cost of a gallon of antifreeze, a new thermostat, and some blue silicone gasket maker is a whole lot cheaper than replacing parts of an engine that overheats and warps...

Heater not blowing hot but engine not overheating

The coolant thermostat needs replaced or you need a coolant flush. Heater cores (in the dashboard) often clog and stop warm coolant from circulating into the heater. A coolant flush would cure this. Flushes usually run from 70 to 90 dollars to have done at a service shop.

2001 Dodge Stratus Overheating

Sounds like you may have a thermostat that is failing or your engine may have had a temporary vapor lock. First of all check your coolant level if that seems fine replace your thermostat. As far as being on high until you shut your heater off is probably just coincidence because when your heater is on it is helping to dissipate the heat from your coolant system.
