Question about 2000 Ford Escort

Cv joint will not fit, bought the right one for 2000 escort turbo diesel esstate, 30 splines, but there is a ledge which is stopping it fitting properly and wheel will not turn when tightened up

Common trouble would be,there is probably a snap ring on the end of the spline keeping it from pushing in all the way,make sure its all the way in,if you have to use a block of wood and hit the inner joint until it snaps in

That sounds like one of the constant velocity joint on a driveshaft is broken, or the splined end(s) on the end of the driveshaft where it fits into the hub, have stripped.

If the splined end of the drivehaft/hub strips, there's nothing to drive that road wheel. The driveshaft will just 'spin' but as it can't mesh with the splines in the hub - no forward motion.

Get somebody who knows what to look for to check both the driveshafts and identify which one is at fault.

Car keeps on removing cv circlip on drive side and lose gears.

I have encountered similar things in the past.

With one car the wheel bearing failed regularly. The repair shop got sick of replacing the bearing free of charge and suddenly became "too busy" and so the car ended up with me.

My instinct told me something was basically wrong but discovering what only became apparent after going back to basics and measuring what could be measured, sketching a few things and sitting and staring for a while.
The car had at some time been fitted with the wrong drive shaft. The date of manufacture was right on a change point and somehow the later shaft had been fitted instead of the earlier one. To a casual glance the two were identical and it was only careful measurement and observation that discovered the difference. The later shaft had a larger radius between the splined shaft of the outer cv joint and the joint body, preventing it mating with the earlier drive flange.

I suggest you go back to basics and take nothing for granted. What you are experiencing should not happen and the reason for it is probably something fairly basic that has been overlooked. It is time to brew a large pot of coffee and spend some time with some precision measuring instruments.

Can not get axle out of trans axle, passenger side.

Put a pry bar or large screwdriver between the transaxle case and the CV joint housing, and try to pop the axle out. Be careful of the axle seal in the transaxle case-if distorted, it will need replacing. Shops use a slide hammer with a forked end that fits around the CV joint housing to pop out the axles-if you use a prybar, you can usually pop them out. There is a circlip near the end of the axle splines that fits in a groove inside the transaxle- a little force pushes the circlip out of the groove, and axle is free to come out.

Cv boot inboard boot

the reason for this is that the oem boot is not at all simple to replace, the whole cv shaft would have to be removed. the universal boot is thin and flexible to try to accomodate many variations of joints without having to remove the whole shaft. only suggestion I could make would be if your going to go thru the trouble to pull the whole shaft would be to totally replace the whole shaft. seriously its not a 30 min job, your looking at probably 3 to 4 hrs or more and thats if you have all the correct tools readily accessible. they don't come out easy, and rarely go back in easy.

  • Loosen the lug nuts (turning counter-clockwise) to finger tight on the front wheel with the damaged CV joint. Buy, borrow or rent a CV nut socket. Some auto parts stores will sell you one for about $30 and refund your money when you return it. Because the CV nut in the center of the wheel hub is locked in place with a safety tab, it is loosened initially with a long breaker bar or a hollow pipe placed over the ratchet handle to increase the torque needed to break the nut free. Loosen to finger tightness.
  • 2 Set safety brakes and jack up the front of the car toward the side of the damaged CV joint using at least a 2 1/2-ton jack. Both the car and the jack should be on a hard, level surface and the lifting point must be a load-bearing member on the chassis or engine cradle. Place two jack stands under the front end and slowly lower the car onto the jack stands so the car chassis is fully resting on the stands. Now, pull out the jack and move it out of the way.
  • 3 Remove the wheel lug nuts and pull off the wheel from the hub. If it doesn't cooperate, kick the bottom of the tire sidewall with the back of your heel or the flat of your hand to dislodge it. Unscrew the center CV nut. To dislodge the male spline outboard end of the CV joint that fits into the female spline in the back of the wheel hub, take the CV nut and screw it back on three or four turns, then strike it with a hammer to partially disengage the splines.
  • 4 Remove the ball joint stud on the lower control arm from its socket in the spindle behind the wheel hub, after you remove a locking bolt, cotter pin or other device that holds the ball joint stud that protrudes from the lower control arm. Then, wedge a pry bar (called a pickle fork) between the tie rod and sway bar. To gain greater leverage, insert the pry bar handle into a length of pipe and apply downward pressure to remove the ball joint stud from the spindle.
  • 5 Remove the CV joint and shaft. With the lower ball joint disconnected from the wheel spindle, the hub can be moved to the side just enough to remove the outer CV joint from the spindle socket in the back of the wheel hub. Do not stretch the brake line that is attached to the wheel brake cylinder as you move the hub aside. With the outboard end of the shaft free of the wheel, pull the shaft straight out from the transmission housing. Because of the labor involved with repairing or replacing CV joints, it's more cost effective to simply replace the entire shaft assembly including the two CV joints and boots.
  • 6 Install the new shaft and CV joint assembly. Clean the transmission seal that came off the old unit; pack it with grease and place it over the inboard spline of the new unit before inserting new shaft into transmission. Make sure splines are lined up before tapping the other end of the shaft with a hammer to seat it in its socket. Carefully insert the other end of the shaft back into the wheel hub and loosely thread on the new CV bolt that came with the assembly.
  • 7 Reinstall the ball joint stud into the spindle by re-inserting the pry bar between the tie rod and the sway bar and leveraging down the lower control arm with the ball joint stud positioned just under the spindle hole. Then release pressure on the pry bar so the ball joint stud re-seats into the spindle. Push the wheel hub all the way onto the shaft spline to seat and torque down the CV nut tight. With a flat head screwdriver tap the lip of the new CV nut into the groove cut into the screw end. Now, re-attach the ball joint locking bolt, put the tire back, replace lug nuts and tighten. Remove the car from the jack stands and finish tightening the tire lug nuts.

    hi from uk have you removed the c v joint from/off the driveshaft ? it has a circlip on the inside of cv spined that keeps d/shaft in place then joint can be cleaned /repacked with grease and the boot is easily fitted/secured after sliding onto d/shaft 1st then cv jount pushed back onto shaft till circlip locks in place hope this helps ?

    How do I change the CV joints on a 1.8TD Ford Escort P reg

    Hi mate

    With the driveshaft removed from the vehicle.

    Undo the the retaining straps on the CV boot.

    Pull the CV boot up the driveshaft a little way, enough so you can clean all the old grease away.

    Now look into the CV joint an locate the circlip that locks the CV to the driveshaft.

    Now put the driveshaft into a vice with the CV joint facing downwards.

    Now open the circlip and at the same time strike the CV joint. You can do this with a ballpin hammer if you are scrapping the CV joint. You can get a helper to stike the CV joint with a hammer while you keep the circlip open.

    This will release the CV joint form the drive shaft.

    Now clean the driveshaft of any old grease and fit a new CV boot if needed.

    Now reverse the driveshift in the vice and fit the new CV joint. It will tap on with no trouble but do not damage it. Test it is on by trying to pull it off with your hands.

    Now fill it with new grease.

    Fit the CV boot to the CV joint and secure it to the CV joint.

    Now it is ready to refit to your vehicle.

    Can i fit a turbo onto a peugeot 205 1.8 diesel engine?

    You can fit a turbo to just about any car, the problems lie in changing the inlet and exhaust manifolds to house the turbo of choice and supplying the turbo with oil and water to cool it, also if the car has a ECU getting it chipped to provide the right amount of fuel at the right time.
    To be honest if you want a turbo car it is best to buy one with a turbo already fitted as it will probably cost you less to buy for example a Mitsubishi Colt Turbo (around £1500) than to fit a Garrett Turbo (around £3000 with fitting and manifolds) to your 205. Not to mention that the gearbox, brakes and suspension would need to be upgraded aswell.

    Diesel injector with 2 wires

    escort diesels dont usually have injectors with wires on them. It sounds like it has got a wrong injector fitted. Unless the wires connect to something else, a standard injector should be ok. If you are in any doubt, have a word with a techy at your local ford garage
