I know this might seem like a pain but remove your starter again and test it with jumper cables to see if the pinion drive extends and rotates if it doesnt then your starter is defective

Won't crank over

The solenoid on the remanufactured starter may be defective. Also, sometimes it is necessary to shim a solenoid to get it to engage the ring gear properly.

I have a92 ford explorer and the starter will not engage tok it off and checked it and it works good but when i put it back on it will not engage

Yeah, you have no resistance against the starter drive gear when you have it out of the car.If the starter has a solenoid atop the starter, is the gear flying outward on the shaft into the engage position?
Even if it is,you could still have a bad drive.
Like IronFist says,if the starter is pretty old, why not replace it? don-ohio

1996 ranger starter will not ingage, have installed new starter??????

Hi,

Did put the right wire in the right connection?
Test the starter by shorting the terminals on the solenoid and (+) solenoid cap.
If it engages the problem would be in the ignition relay or switch.
If it does not engages the but the motor runs the problem would be the the bendix gear drive!

Better yet the garage will check it thoroughly!

My 99 Nissan Sentra will not start.new. I The car is not turning over at all.its making like a whining noise but not from a dead battier. best way i can describe it is free spinning What could the problem...

starter gear is not engaging the flexplate. solenoid mechanism should engage the gear. I think the starter and solenoid is sold together for this car, so this shoud fix it (about $140 for the part).

Won't start, starter will spin but will not engage fly wheel to crank up engine

Sounds like the starter drive is shot, best thing to do is replace starter with new or rebuild.
