Hi:
Those designate the three different speeds on the auto transmission. If you select D, it automatically shifts thru all gears as conditions require. If you select L, it will stay in Low gear, or first, and if you select H, it will shift thru all gears except the overdrive gear.

I put a new automatic gearbox and transfer case in my 80 serious Land Cruiser but it wont move when I put it in drive or reverse, what could be the problem?

this is indicative of a torque converter clutch problem
(servo/solenoid )
see as to how you just fitted the transmission I would be checking all wires and connections first
second are you sure that the unit worked before fitting it

Does an automatic transmission have a countershaft?

Depends on the gearbox design. Aisin(Toyota) troque converter automatic trannys are generally epicyclic (planetary), so are (GM and Ford) TC automatics. And I have heard Honda uses a countershaft design for its automatic trannys. Dual clutch automatic trannys have in general countershaft design as opposed to TC automatics.

Automatic trans stuck in low

first a black thick cable connects between acclerator control and the straight to the gearbox.[yoou can find it easily].just put less force and pull towards you[just a inch, holding top end in your hand] and release back to normal.if you cant then you have to clean the cable.secondly, clean the filter in the automatic gearbox...it can be doneby petrol and dry with blower.
