Question about 1996 GMC Savana

2 Answers

I have A 1996 GMC Savana 3500 5.7L I was driving down the road and the vehicle just shut down. Tried to start it and it would not start. Sprayed starting fluid in the intake and it fired right up but would only run when spraying starting fluid in intake. Replaced the fuel pump, still no luck. Theres no power to the fuel pump or throttle body. Replaced a relay & the computer but still no luck. Checked all the fuses none are blown. The horn & the head lights also quit working. Any suggestions?

I would check any fuseable links going to the starter or the large hot wire connection on the back of the altinator.

Does it have any power when you start moving? I've seen a lot of plugged catalytic converters. You may want to have an exhaust back-pressure test done.

What is the popper gear to drive in when driving a 1996 GMC Suburban

Opinion based question,,Overdrive was intended to benefit larger vehicles on open road rides of distance,,uses less power to maintain steady speed, Drive was intended to be used in more urban settings, red lights pedestrians, stop and starts frequently,,more pull out power to avoid other vehicles in city setting............fuel efficency was the thought. L2 L1 pulling torque or severe condition roads only.

look under the hood on the right side where your brake fluid is..There is a black box to the farest right of the brake fluid. take off the lid to this box were you will find fuses..Reach in and feel the fuses to see if any are loose. The largest fuses in the front, push down on those and then try to start it up..Take them out look at them make sure there ok if this dont work..they the one bad might need to be replaced..

Transmission

It is most likely a plugged filter. I would try performing a transmission service on it and change the filter. What is happening is that the pump will only **** for a bit until a greater demand is on it. Once the pump is stopped ( shutting engine off) the fluid migrates back into the filter and fills it up. Engine is started and trans will work ok until all fluid is exhausted out of filter and it "gives out". Try this out first, it is a cheap start, and most likely is the problem.
