Question about 1983 Ford F 250

1986 f 250 diesel with C6 transmission. it doesnt shift up until 2500 rpm and it will shift down on me at around 1800. this just started. i have checked i do have vacuum. thank you

There is a rod that runs from the injection pump to the trans on the drivers side. it should move freely and there should be a spring that holds it forward so that it only pushes back when you push down on the excellerater.

Sounds like TPS (Throttle Positioning Switch) They develop "hot spots" or wear spots usually at throttle positions that are commonly used alot IE: cruising speed. When they get hot spots they fluctuate looking for solid connection. Replace TPS.

When i get to 100km/h the truck rpm stays at 2500 and wont shift into overdrive so the truck in hard on fuel on the highway. when i got the truck it shifted into overdrive just fine and the rpm were 1800...


This problem could be one of several it is hard to pin point the car needs to be hoisted up and checked out further for torque converter which is between the motor and transmission or it could be a internal transmission valve this is why it needs to be hoisted up preferably at a transmission specialist.

nothing.... it's a diesel. transmission compensates shift point for higher rpm to assist in warm up. start it up and have a coffee. than drive..

you want the simple answer....its a Dodge, i drive one to, but its true....


complex answer has much more to do with the size of the holes within the transmission where the fluid flows, the clogg up easily with the older fluid, and the seals and bands cant handle it

things you can try

cheapest: fluid and filter, and throw in a bottle of lucas oil for transmissions, this will settle this down some and the lucas oil help for smoother shift

more expensive: fluid flush at a shop, this will do the same thing as a fluid change, but it changes all of the fluid, where as a regualar fluid change only gets about 3/4 new

most expensive, get a rebuid, ultimatly you will have to replace this transmission in the future, you can try the other swteps first and they may help for a while but once a transmission starts going downhill you can slow it down but you cant stop it.

The PCM is allowing torque converter slippage until the transmission reaches normal operating temperature because cold transmission fluid is a drag on the engine and causes it to burn more fuel.

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram that doesn't like to shift into 2nd when flooring it from a Stop. Imagine if you were to floor the gas in neutral, the engine REDLINEs and the engine governor kicks in to keep the RPM from blowing the engine......while stuck in first Gear. If i let off the gas, it goes into 2nd fine. I have replaced the Speed Sensor on the transmission ($18) and it seemed to fix it for one day. After 200 miles, its doing it again. ANybody have legitimate answers in here? Its only got 60K miles..wtf?
