Question about 2003 Ford Focus

1 Answer

Intake manifold runner control stuck open

I also have the same code on my 2003 focus. It also does not start very well when it is cold. The car will back fire and sputter for about 30 sec before it warms up and smooths out. I have had it into the Ford Dealership 2 times and they say the runners are working fine and cannot find anything wrong.

Forget that Dealer. They do not want your business because, they are capable of repairing both your vehicles. You need to find a good repair facility near your home, before you need one. Should have done that before dealer warrantee was up. You can't solve theses issues unless your a knowledgable auto technician. Do not drive any of todays vehicles with check engine lights etc on dash and all the other issues you have. Everyone is trying to save money hoping things go away. We no longer live in the 1960's. Theses are expensive cars to buy and maintain. There are very few so called auto mechanics with even basic electrical knowledge to even attempt to solve todays technology on a vehicle and no training avail for them. Did you drive the vehicle with a tech riding with you? Did they drive it with you riding in it? Was it acting up when you took it in? Forget the service writer at the dealership and get the person who has the task and knowledge of your veh systems. If they don't mention a road test with you present, they have no intention of finding your problems. I used to own a Trans Repair Shop. You got drilled for a half hour and I needed a years history on the vehicle or I turned the job away. Also I was very clear on the costs involved as well as the % of even finding an issue.

2003 ford focus 2.3 litre DTC P2004 intake manifold runner control stuck open. What does it mean when it says shorted to VREF or signal circuit shorted open or shorted to VPWR.

code p 2004 refers to intake manifold air control actuator bank 1--actuator stuck open===causes --wiring--intake manifold air control actuator---mechanical fault
it also refers to intake manifold air control solenoid bank 1--solenoid stuck open=== causes --wiring---intake manifold air control solenoid---mechanical fault
reference auto data technical fault codes
I cannot find reference to the VREF or VPWR as they may be referenced in a ford workshop manual so you may have to ask a ford service person what they stand for but I suspect that they will come back to the same thing as listed in the causes

P2004 intake man.control bank 1 stuck open

The intake manifold runner control (IMRC) cables have plastic ends that like to break. Check your IMRC to see if the cable it attached. If the cable s attached, then the IMRC actuator is probably defective. (see diagram)

Check engine light on, code is p2004, manifold runner or vac line leak. car runs fine can't pass emmission testing, where should we start to look first?

P2004 is intake manifold runner stuck open control bank 1. This code should be related to your EVAP system. Did you try resetting the ECM and then the light came back on? If so, did you look at the readiness status? After driving the car awhile different systems should have come out of default and one should have been listed "not complete". Which one was it?
Start by looking for pinched or broken vacuum lines, oil dip-stick not in place or oil fill-cap missing, maybe a missing or defective gas-cap. Anything further would take the use of special tools and a look at live data, to hopefully narrow this down. Good luck.
