Question about 2003 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

Our sunfire has had the gauges on the dash stop functioning twice now. The first time was when the battery was replaced during an inspection, After that battery died and was replaced, the gauges started working again. Recently the fuel pump needed to be replaced and the battery cable had to be disconnected. After reconnecting the battery cable, the gauges were out again. Do you have any ideas or suggestions for us? (Gas, Speedometer, Tachometer, and Temperature not functioning)

OK let's it looks like the connector did get acid on it. It actually looks more like rust around the wires where they go into the connector but the connector itself looks clean. Is there a way to clean this up so it works? There are about 20 wires here, does the connector and/or the entire cluster of wires need to be cut out and replaced? What's my most likely and easiest next step? Thanks

This is pretty common in these. If you look under the battery tray, on the passenger side rear corner, there is a big electrical connector. GM, in there infinite knowledge, placed a drain hole in that corner of the battery tray. If the battery leaks acid, it drips on this connector and eats up the plastic and terminals inside.I'm betting that your cluster problems are related to this also. The may also be related to your BCM, body control module... lets start with the basics. Let me know if you need more info.

2003 Sunfire automatic 245000km runs well, engine stops while driving, clicking under the dash, then restarts , runs fine until next time

with the details that you have provided, it sounds like it may be either a ground, or ignition relay, but I've also encountered the same problem being the starter wire to the starter. The reason I think that is because of your dash lights coming back on .If you have use of a voltmeter you can test and see how much power is actually going to the starter An ignition relay could do the same, but usually won't interrupt the engine after it's running.

I have a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire with a 2.2L motor. It runs great considering how old it is. Last week I started it up and several of my dash lights stayed on. They are: The oil light, the battery...

Sounds to be the dash itself. there is a chip in there and it sounds like it shorted out. You have to replace the panel. Junk yard would be best and cheapest.

2003 Sundifre won't STAY running

The gauge problem sounds like the common issue on the 03-05 Sunfire instrument clusters where the stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board fail over time. It can be fixed, check out this page for more on how to get it repaired - Sunfire instrument cluster fix

Pontiac Sunfire Dashboard Guages don't Work

Dashboard gauges have a wiring problem. Most Sunfires have these especially late models. It's a common defect. While the gauges will run fine most of the time, the primary instigator is heat. The more the car heats up inside the cabin, the more the gauges will stick. So keep the inside cool, and you'll be fine. Trying to replace with Chevrolet Cobalt gauges. I'll tell you if they work.
