Question about 2001 Volkswagen Golf
I do not know the particulars of the Golf, but in most cars, you have to take down the inside of the door panel in order to reach the bolts that hold the mirror in place. if you can do that, its very simple to unhook the wires connected to the motor inside the mirror, or if the mirrors are manual, to unhook the cable, and reattach to the new unit. Test the mirror for freedom of movement and adjustment before you reassemble the door upholstery panel. Needless to say, the only way to reach the mirror from the inside, is with the window rolled down. Roll it down before you take the panel out, because you will need to disconnect the window switch.

No usually you just use an Allen Wrench to remove the mirror but if it's an electric mirror you will also need to cut the wires and re-wire them up by using **** connectors and crimping them down with wire cutters.
You can buy these connectors at any Auto Parts store or even a Wal Mart they look like little round barrows.

On a mk 4 golf you only need th take off the inner cap (pulls off)to get at the screws for the mirror ,watch the wires ,dont pull too hard.easy job....(cap shaped like a triangle bottom front of window frame)
