Ck the PCV valve hose/ tubing. Follow it from the pcv valve (right valve cover) to the rear of the intake manifold. The tube usually leaks where it attaches to the back of the intake manifold. Be sure to get the number off the old tube, to find a new one from the dealer.

SOURCE: Engine racing, will not idle. Not a stuck throotle

the trottle position sensor is the most likely problem, this is fairly common.if that is not the case the you likely need to repair leeks in the intake, base of throttlebody usually.

SOURCE: engine races ten resumes normal idle, also

you may have a worn or loose belt....if not it may be your waterpump squealing...your belts turn the pump...check and see if you have coolant dripping from under the front of the engine..thanks

knocked the ECT connector wires loose?
so my guess you mean, hot engine races, because cold engines all do that , by design.
racing idle hot.
  1. engine not hot. thermostat bad.
  2. engine hot and Ect Sensor lies, (wires fell off)
  3. ISC valve stuck open or wires, bad to it.
  4. vacuum hose knocked loose or you cracked it, now sucks air and engine races, (speed density EFI systems
  5. .
lots more, but am lazy , on beach

My daughter has an '88 F250 with the 460. Recently the engine races when starting and running, never going back to idle. Check Eng light is on

Have them spray (lightly) starting fluid around the intake with the truck running. If there is a leak the engine will idle up even more. They may also just need to adjust the throttle linkage.

Engine races hot or cold

It sounds very much like the idle air valve is faulty as I have just had same sort of problem I fitted a new idle air valve and it has cured mine. Unfortunately these idle air valves are not cheap. They are about £70 from ford but you can get them on ebay for about £30 from partsdome
