Question about 2002 Ford Thunderbird

1 Answer

I don't know where the fuses are for the console lighter and accessory power outlet in a 2002 Ford Thunderbird. Neither work now, though they did before I started plugging my laptop computer into it. I guess maybe it draws more current than the fuse can handle. The transformer says that it is 19V and 3.95A. That does seem like a considerable amount of current! I will have to check what the maximum load on them should be, but I sure could use it for my phone, and GPS! Please can you tell me where the fuses might be!

Thanks for your response Dirtboy03. I finally found an e-Owners Manual online. As it turns out the panel is on the passenger side kickboard, way up near the firewall. Once you find the fuse box location, the fuse is Number 32, which is a 20amp fuse. When I checked, it restored power to only one of the outlets, I only see one fuse listed so I'm not sure whats up with that!

Thanks for your comments Dirtboy03. I finally found an owner's manual online. As it turns out the main fuse box is located on the passenger side of the interior up high on the kick board. The fuse itself is number 32, which is 20A.

Strangely enough power was restored for only one of the lighter outlets. I could not find any other references to what they listed in number 32 as a "Cigar Lighter". No other 20Amp fuses except for number 18: radio, and number 19: Tilt Tele motors. (If you wonder why the tilt steering wheel would have a fuse it is because steering wheel automatically tilts up when you turn off the ignition so that you can get in and out more easily - pretty cool, actually).

Look up under the steering wheel, or on the left side of the dash when you open the door.

Accessory power outlet on 2002 chevy cavalier doesn't work

Fuses for both the Cigarette lighter and accessory outlet are in the door fuse panel. If they're good, you're looking at a bad outlet, or disconnected wiring

My lighter doesnt work, i have two and one doesnt work

There are actually FIVE cigarette lighter/ Auxilliary Power Outlets shown in the wiring diagrams for your vehicle.
The Instrument Panel [1] Accessory Power Outlet (Cigarette Lighter) is protected by the "LTR" Fuse (# 53 - 20 Amp) in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in the engine compartment.

The Instrument Panel [2] Accessory Power Outlet is protected by the "AUX PWR" Fuse (20 Amp) In the Instrument Panel Fuse Block on the left side of the dash.

The Center Seat Accessory Power Outlet and the (two) Center Console Power Outlets are protected by the "AUX PWR 2" Fuse (20 Amp) In the Instrument Panel Fuse Block on the left side of the dash. NOTE: If your vehicle is not equipped with the Center Seat Accessory Power Outlet, or the Custom Floor Console (optional), this fuse position will most likely be empty.

Neither lighter outlet works on my 01 allero, just bought it used so don't know if and when they did work! Help..need to charge stuff!!

You have options there. First use a test light and probe the center terminal of the outlet. If it has power, check the ground on the socket. If no power, check the fuse. (if you have no diagram, probe all of them and replace any that don't have power at both ends with the key on, and replace any that are blown. the one you are looking for is usually 20 or 25 amp). Your other option is to create a new circuit. To do that, find an open fuse port that only has power with the key on. attach a wire (close to 14 gauge is best) to a spade connector and plug it into the fuse connection that has power. Run that wire to the connector at the rear of the accessory port (lighter housing center post). If you do that, make sure you install an accessory fuse holder in that wire that is rated at 25 amps. I use that method to install additional ports so you don't have to plug in one of those "octopus outlets" in a working power outlet. Only difference is that I also install a new lighter housing into the dash. That requires a new hole in the dash or console and a ground wire to the outside of the housing.

Cannot locate where the fuse is that controls my cigarette lighter in front console and the passenger back seat. The lighter in the very back of my vehicle works. I want to replace the fuse. My lighter...

Hi, that fuse is in the box under the hood. See pic below. I think it's fuse 32. Fuse 45 also powers those outlets but also power a lot of other circuits. The fuse for the outlet in the very back of the car is on the interior fuse panel, #14. All of this information is in your owners manual.
