I have a 1999 cougar and the back end keeps pulling out to the right like my drivers side wheel is locking up. What could be causing this??

Hello, some of the Front wheel drive cars used a rear suspension system which requires an Alignment just the same as the front end. You can get the rear Alignment separately but it is usually a packaged 4 wheel Alignment. Jack up the back end of the car and turn the wheels and check for them turning hard. This will indicate a brake or bearing problem.

The rear wheels do have an Emergency brake which can cause problems dragging even when not used. The bonded lining falls off the brake shoe when it rusts and the lining falls onto the rotating parts and gets ground up. Sometimes you will hear a noise like loose rust as you stop and start at low speeds. You can also have a sticking rear Caliper or drum brake.

The rear hubs have bearings which can fail; usually you will hear noises or have vibrations when the bearings are worn loose. Your best bet is to remove the rear brake rotor and visually inspect the Emergency brakes and feel the turning of the rear hub bearing. If you do not have the rear brake assembly on the car it will be easier to work on the bearing. Bearings are made 2 ways. The Sealed bearings are replaced as a hub unit. The Serviceable bearings have removeable bearings and races.

You want to have the rear bearing in good shape before having an Alignment. The Sealed bearing hubs are the easiest to replace by removing and replacing only bolts. The Serviceable bearings can require punching out and installing a new race, then packing the bearing with grease.

Some shops do both Brakes and Alignment and some just do the brakes. You can fix what you can handle before getting an Alignment or pay for both jobs. I hope you find my solution very helpful.

My steering wheel is hsaking and vibrating really

You need to jack up the car and check that wheel right away. You may have a bad bearing and/or spindle. A front end problem like this is very dangerous so please check or have checked asap. The car should not be driven till this problem is repaired. The axle joint may be causing the clicking or the bearing. But if it looks as if the wheel could fall off don't drive it to a repair shop if you are not repairing have it towed.

Changing front wheel bearrings. how?

Dear Wheel Bearing Replacer,
First off, get the vehicle safely supported high enough in the air so you can remove the front wheels.Once the front wheels are off then remove the brake calipers and caliper bridges by removing the two bolts on the back side of the spindle. The whole brake caliper and mount along with pads will come off for you.You will need to tug a little so the pads will pass over the rotor when you pull them off. After the caliper is off swing that out of the way. Then remove your rotor, if it does not easily fall off then a coule little taps with a soft hammer will persuade. Then you will have bolts on the back of the spindle that you need to loosen and remove to remove the bearing. After those are loose then loosen your halfshaft nut and remove that, take the outer end of the halfshaft out, then you can replace the bearing and hub assy...any other questions get back to me...I'M HERE TO HELP!!!

How do I get the front brake rotors off a 1999 nissan pathfinder, 2 wheel drive

First block the rear wheels so they won't roll.
2. Jack the front end up and put on jack stands don't trust the jack for long periods of time.
3. Remove front wheels and brake calipers.
4. In the center of the rotor as you look at it is a dust cover remove this
5. There should be a lock cap with a cotter pin thru it, remove the pin and lock cap
6. Remove the nut holding the bearings in place.
7. Remove rotor by pulling toward you, be careful the bearings will come out also, don't let them fall or get dirty.
8. There is a seal in the back of the rotor to give access to inner bearing.
9. Replace seals and repack inner and outer bearings and reverse to install. Being careful not to over tighten the front wheel bearings. If you do they wil sieze up then you have a real mess.

91 ford explorer making bad noises in the front by the front tire

BY THE SOUNDS OF IT ONE OF YOUR WHEEL BEARINGS HAS GONE BAD. WHAT I WOULD DO IS JACK UP THE FRONT END AND CHECK FOR PLAY IN THE WHEELS MOVE BACK AND FORTH TOP TO BOTTOM SIDE TO SIDE. CHANCES ARE YOU WILL FIND ONE OF THOSE WHEELS HAS ALOT OF PLAY IN IT. IF THAT IS THE CASE YOU WILL WANT TO REPLACE THE INNER AND OUTTER WHEEL BEARING AND THE WHEEL SEAL. TRY THAT GOOD LUCK AND HOPETHIS HELPED.

Left rear wheel bearing

Hi

Quite easy !

Slacken your wheel nuts, Jack up the car, support on an axle stand, remove the wheel.

Knock off the little domed dust cap with a screwdriver.

Remove the split pin, and undo the nut.

The drum should now pull off if you remember to let off the hand brake !

Pull out the inner seal and the bearing race will fall out, also remove the outer bearing race.

Now you have to knock out the 2 bearing tracks from the drum hub.

Clean up the drum, carefully tap in the 2 new bearing tracks with a socket, and then grease the bearing races liberally with LM bearing grease.

Fit the bearing races to the drum, along with the new seal, and refit the drum, tighten the castle nut, then just back it off slightly, and fit new split pin, and then the dust cap.

Back on with the wheel, and give it a spin, and check for play by holding tyre, top and bottom.

Good Luck !

Let me know if you have any problems !
