Steering wheel not returning

When on full lock car will just go round in circle, even though I let go of wheel.

2004 Toyota highlander steering wheel is locked but turned halfway, key wont turn and wheels are straight


there is a load on the lock pin in the steering column try turning the steering wheel a bit left or right to release the pin as you try turning the key.
Steering wheel locks never lock straight ahead as the idea is that if the car is being stolen it will turn a circle rather that move straight

Why won't my ignition key turn over and my steering wheel is locked in place at the sametime?


I'm assuming you mean your key wont turn in the ignition. first off check to make sure the car is in park. then what you gotta do is put in the key and put a little pressure as if turning but dont turn too hard, then even though the steering wheel is locked you will have to try to move it a little, if you parked with your tires turned then you will want to try to turn the wheel in the same direction, (even locked you should be able to move it about a half inch) you will have to turn the wheel hard but it should move enough to allow the key to turn, you may have to jiggle the key a little in the ignition but it should eventually turn, just remember not to try turning the key too hard, the extra force wont make it go but can cause the key to break. this tends to happen when you turn the car off andthe steering wheel gets locked if the wheels are turned hard in either direction. also if multiple attempts at this still dont work, try taking the key out and turning it over and trying again. Even though both sides of the key are identicle, because of wear on the key and the ignition, sometimes when the wheel locks the ignition, it will only turn if the key is put in a certain way. Steering is noisy at slow speeds when turning


This car is essentailly the same as the Lincoln LS & T-Bird.

ISSUE: Some 2003-2005 Thunderbird, Aviator, and Lincoln LS vehicles may exhibit steering gear squeak when turning the steering wheel, especially during low speed parking maneuvers. The noise may sound like it is coming from the steering column area and may be felt as a roughness in the steering wheel, while turning.
ACTION: Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE: USE ONLY THE FLUID AND ADDITIVE SPECIFIED IN THIS ARTICLE. USING ANY OTHER FLUIDS OR ADDITIVES MAY RESULT IN SEAL DETERIORATION AND LEAKS.
  1. Open the hood and remove the power steering reservoir cap.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 100-00.
  3. With engine off, drain power steering fluid by disconnecting steering lines and clamp plate from steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Removal and Installation procedure in Workshop Manual, Section 211-00, follow only the steps required to disconnect the steering lines.
  4. Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock to drain fluid completely.
  5. Reconnect steering lines and clamp plate to steering gear. Torque retainer to 15 N-m (11 lb-ft) for Lincoln LS and Thunderbird, torque to 25 N-m (18 lb-ft) for Aviator.
  6. Lower vehicle.
  7. In a clean container mix 50 ml (10 teaspoons or 1.7 oz.) of Motorcraft Additive Friction Modifier, Part Number XL-3, with 50 ml of Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid, Part Number XT-2-QDX. NOTE: DO NOT PERFORM STEPS 8 AND 9 ON A HOT VEHICLE.
  8. Pour the above mixture into the power steering reservoir.
  9. Top off (fill) the power steering system with Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid, Part Number XT-2-QDX and reinstall the power steering reservoir cap.
  10. Raise vehicle on hoist enough so the front wheels are off the ground and can be turned from lock-to-lock.
  11. Start the engine and keep it at idle. Remain inside of the vehicle.
  12. Slowly cycle the steering wheel from lock-to-lock for two (2) minutes.
  13. Quickly and forcefully turn the steering wheel in one direction to full lock (either side). Bounce the steering wheel on/off of full lock twenty (20) times forcefully. NOTE: IT IS CRITICAL THAT THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED QUICKLY AND FORCEFULLY IN ORDER TO CREATE A PRESSURE SPIKE IN THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM.
  14. Repeat Step 13 in the other direction. Return the steering wheel to on center position.
  15. Slowly turn steering wheel to full lock in one direction (either direction) to achieve maximum pump pressure. Hold at full lock for one (1) second, then turn the steering wheel back 90 degrees as quickly as possible. Repeat this procedure twenty (20) times. NOTE: DO NOT HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL AGAINST THE STOPS FOR MORE THAN THREE TO FIVE (3-5) SECONDS AT A TIME. DAMAGE TO THE POWER STEERING PUMP MAY OCCUR.
  16. Repeat Step 15 in the other direction.
  17. Cycle the steering wheel slowly for 1 minute to confirm that the squeak is corrected and return vehicle to the customer. NOTE: IF THE SQUEAK CONTINUES, REPEAT STEPS 13-16 ONE ADDITIONAL TIME. IF THE SQUEAK IS STILL NOT CORRECTED PROCEED TO STEP 18.
  18. If the squeak is still present after performing Step 17, replace the steering gear. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 211-00 for removal and installation procedures.

I have a constant wobble at the steering wheel when driving in a straight line which does disapear when turning also the steering is sometimes jumpy and also have a loud sqealing noise on either full lock...


The noise at full lock is the pump screaming for mercy. All power steering pumps will complain a bit if the steering is held at full lock. Now, if the belt to the pump is loose, it will scream even louder, because holding the steering at full lock will cause the belt to slip. There is also a technical service bulletin for your vehicle concerning loud power steering noise which involves replacing the fluid lines and.or fluid cooler. This is not cause for concern, but an aggravation to the ears.

The "wobble" thing in the steering wheel is a whole different story. If it is wobbling all the time, it would almost have to be a tire/wheel or axle problem. I know you said this is not the problem, but I think you need to look again. Try rotating the tires to the back and see if the wobble changes. A very severerly warped brake rotor can cause this also, but will be much worse during braking. A bad axle shaft can also cause a wobble in the steering. This is consistent with your description of the problem changing during turns...A bad axle shaft can do this. Also check for looseness in the front wheel bearings.

Turn the wheel slightly towards the direction you last turned it in and hold it there. This will remove the friction against the key lock, allowing you to turn the key and unlock the steering coulomb.

The steering coulomb lock is a safety feature that keeps criminals from driving off with your car in the event that they hotwire it. It locks the wheel slightly to the left or right, so they will only go in circles.

i would have the car jacked up and check out the wheel bearings and the steering lock it may be that the wheels are moving round to far and or hitting the body work becouse the steering lock stops are wrongly ajusted in witch case if you turn the car wheel to full lock and try to pull away you would scuff the tyers off the wheel rims or the very least push the tyers off the rims and they will go flat prity fast

may be the slip joint in the steering column is slipping in a rotational way stick your head under the dash and turn the wheel and watch the slip joint in the column if the lower part stops but the top part keeps moving get a new/ second hand stearing collum

Rear limited slip diff test


hi jack it up with one of your rear wheels off the ground the other on the ground if your diffs locked up it will stall and try to move your motor if its ok the wheel will just rotate the wheel that is off the ground rare to have a locked diff though plus if you you go round in a circle a right one then a left one it should go smoothly in a circle if the back end sways make a note of is it both sides or just one side yates210456

Steering issue


Your steering rack has a leaky internal seal, you will need to replace the rack and flush the system to remove any debris fro,m the failed rack.
