Hi:
It is good that you checked your gas cap, as that is a frequent cause of a check engine light, but there are also hundreds of other things too. A good idea is to go to your local auto parts store, and get your code downloaded for free, to see what tripped the light. Once you get that info, you can work towards the repair. I hope you get a cheap fix

Why does the check engine light comes on saying the gas cap is loose or off when it is on tight.

Hi,
looks like there is a sensor on the filler cap/lid side.
which is faulty and not sending correct signal to the main computer in the car.

MY 2005 Kia Spectra check engine light came on as I was driving, no problems visible. Do I have a need for concern?

You should have the code read to see what it is. This can be done for free at your local auto zone, advanced auto, or o`rielys. Some cars are so sensitive that not getting the gas cap tight will send a code but you wont know because it takes like 70 starting cycles to clear on its own. Have it checked as soon as possible to be sure.

My gas cap light is on

Remove your gas cap and retighten it, if it continues to come on may consider getting new o-ring for your cap or new cap all together.

My check engine light came on today. i hear nothing unusual in the engine. is it safe to drive from charleston, sc to Knoxville TN tomorrow?

If the check engine light is blinking, you should get it looked at before making any long trips. It probably would be a good idea to have the car scanned to find out what the fault is. One common reason for the light to come on is a loose gas cap.

Check engine light stays on. Dealer hasn't suppied owners manual yet.

Usully an OBD emissions diagnostic event. This is to say not always a huge issue. try removing and retightening the gas cap, did you just fuel the vehicle, could be bad gas. either way you can go to your local auto parts store and they will check it out on a scanner for free. they will be able to tell you what trouble codes the computer is displaying and tell you "GENERALLY" what the problem could be.

Check engine light

The gasket or large o-ring on the under side of the cap might be warn not keeping a tight seal. replace gasket or o-ring, or get a new cap, and see if that cures it.

Check engine light on

I had the same problem. I went to the kia dealer and they checked the code that caused the light to be on and found I had a leak in the gas cap. They replaced the gas cap and the problem went away. You night need to find out what made the check engine light go on in the first place.
