There is a switch either on the transmission that is activated when you shift into reverse. Either the switch is bad or the wiring to the switch is broken or disconnected. If you have a manual transmission, this is probably the only switch with wires. If you have an automatic, there may be more than one, so you'll have to check as many as you find.

Look for a short in the wire running back along the frame. It most likely has chafed through or been partly cut.

I have a 2006 Nissan Altima, changed the light bulb and checked the fuse, the light is still not working

Do you have a multimeter? If so,
  1. Put the meter on Ohms and check that the new bulb conducts. It should show a few ohms. If it shows infinity (same as the old bulb), then the new bulb is also bad.
  2. Put the meter on Volts, turn on the lights, and CAREFULLY check that there is voltage at the socket.
If you don't have a multimeter, try another new bulb in case the other new one was bad.

Have you checked the fuse for the gauges ?
If the fuse has voltage, it could be something in the circuit board inside the cluster.

My son reversed the terminals on his 1986 Nissan King Cab 4x4. All works now but the Battery light on the dash is dimly lit and the radio dose not work. I checked the fuses on the inside panel and all seem...

if the battery light is on when the engine is running you may have damaged the voltage regulator in the alternator, as for the radio it has certainly sustained serious damage,it might be cheaper to replace than to repair......hope this helps....cheers

When put in reverse the lights dont work. have checked bulbs they are ok. any suggestions welcome

Have you checked for voltage at the light socket with the bulbs removed? If no voltage, then you may have a bad reverse switch. If you have voltage, (with car off, car in reverse, and ignition on) the try new bulbs. Even a bulb that LOOKS good can be bad

2000 Nissan Maxima. Headlights work but tail lights won't come on. How do you fix the wiring of this?I have changed the bulbs and nothing. The brake, reverse, and turn signal lights work, so the bulbs...

tail lights work on a different filament than the rest of the lights you mentioned, it is possible both bulbs are burned out for that filament. if not, check the fuses as the tail light circuit in some cars is on a seperate fuse. the remaining possibility could be bad socket contacts.

Reverse lights dont work.escort van.1.8 none turbo.2002.

With engine off and key on, emergency brake set, place the gear selector in reverse, using a volt ohm meter check for voltage at bulb terminals. If voltage is present then the switch is working and the wiring to the lamp is good. Next check the other terminal with the ohmmeter to ground for connection. Sounds like a bad ground.

Reverse lights on my vauxhal corsa v reg are not working

Yes. You can get the MOT station to do the repair or you can try and solve the problem. Check your fuses, the earth connections, your wiring and the voltage at the bulb. It could also be a faulty switch. I hope some of that will help.
