Question about 1998 Nissan Frontier

1 Answer

1998 Frontier 4wd truck has had electrical issues.(battery drains overnight) Had been jump starting but now refuses to start and I suspect the starter is bad and had been causing the problem all along. My mechanic could not locate the problem and it is dead in the driveway now. I ike the truck but the dependability issue is driving me nuts. This was only an occasional problem but began to happen more recently. It has only 44,000 miles.

What kind if mechanic can not figure out a starting problem? He may need a career change. Your best bet ,sorry to say, is find a capable repair facility and get the ground rules set from the start, as to what they are capable of troubleshooting and be prepared to pay for their time, as you already know, or you would have solved this youself. I know it is 1998 but these issues take time to solve and involve knowledge of reading electrical schematics and have electrical and electronic knowledge also. That does not exist in the auto repair business and they can not spend all day figuring it out because they know you won't pay for their learning curve.

Bought new battery. morning vuka don't want to start. mornings I had to jump start it 0km still refuse to start on its own

Probably something draining the battery overnight. Interior light left on? The regulator in the alternator could be bad and keeping the ignition energized draining the battery. If your jump start it drive to work get off work and it starts after 8-9 hrs you have a system voltage leak some where. If nothing is left on overnight have the voltage regulator tested in the alternator.

MY CAPTIVA REFUSED TO START. After a jump was able to start it. Had battery checked, fully charged, no issues. Car sat overnight & is now dead. Yes, made sure lights, etc were off.

I can think of 2 possibilities. A battery can be quirky sometimes. It may check out fine, but then loose standing storage very quickly. To check this. Charge battery fully up and check it with a VOM (or just start the car with it to prove its working) Shut the car off - Then disconnect the battery negative post so that the battery is not connected to the car. Rehook the battery up after 12 hours and see if it starts the car again. If it doesn't start, battery is probably bad. If the battery then starts the car, you have an electrical drain somewhere that is running the battery down when the car sits. This can be anything from an aftermarket alarm to a amp stuck on. Have someone check how much power is drawn at the battery with everything off.

Why truck stop after 2 minute after jumpstart 1998 frontier

It could be that your security system is shutting the car off. However, I would suspect the alternator is not putting out enough current to keep the car running very long. A jump start would give the battery a slight charge, which wears out quickly. Just a guess.

1997 Toyota Camry XLE has an overnight parasitic battery drain-I suspect the factory installed anti theft system. can this be diabled? When I remove - terminal over night and replace in the morning, car...

This should be done with everything turned off and the door closed. with negative battery disconnected. place 12 v test light between the battery terminal and the cable end.(on neg. side) if the light lites up there is a drain. remove one fuse at a time until u see the lite go out. that is the sytem the drain is on. usually glove box light or trunk light or visor light left on or stuck on.
