For 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD 5.2L MFI 8cyl:
The Crankshaft Position Sensor is located under hood, center, rear engine area, top driver side of transmission bellhousing, mounted in bellhousing.

If you have access to a car lift, take the trans cross member down. It will allow better access to the sensor. You can used a piece of toilet paper around the bolt head and stuck it into the socket, this prevented the bolt from falling down and into the bell housing, try using a wobble ext. at one end or the other or even try in between the 12" ones.

Here can find some graphics about location:
- Sensor Locations 1-4
- Sensor Locations 2-4

Also can find interesting this video...
Hope helps with this.

I have a code p1762 for my 97 jeep grand cherokee

Trouble code P1762 means: Governor pressure sensor offset improper voltage. Gov. Pressure Sensor. It is located in the valve body of the transmission and requires dropping the transmission pan to replace. Sounds much more difficult than it is. Since you have to change your fluid it's a good idea to change the trans. filter .
