Here have Ford Cruise Control Recall Ford Motor Company announced a massive safety recall on 1994-2002 vehicles to correct a problem that could cause the cruise control deactivation switch to overheat and create an underhood fire.

Models Affected by Ford's Cruise Control Recall

  • 1994-2002 Ford F-150s
  • 1997-2002 Ford Expeditions
  • 1998-2002 Lincoln Navigators
  • 1994-1996 Ford Broncos with factory cruise control
Ford found that brake fluid could leak through the cruise deactivation switch into the cruise system's electrical components and cause corrosion. Corrosion can cause a short and keep the cruise control from working, but in some cases it can lead to a higher flow of current that can overheat and cause a fire at the switch.

Fixing the Problem To repair trucks, Ford will install a jumper harness between the cruise control deactivation switch and the cruise mechanism. The harness will act as a circuit breaker and will turn off the current at the switch if the switch becomes shorted.

Parts for the repair weren't available as of the recall date, so Ford asks customers to take their vehicles to dealerships to have the cruise control deactivated until the harnesses are in stock.

Watch for a recall notice by mail if your vehicle is affected. You can read more details at www.genuineservice.com.

UPDATE: August, 2006 Ford has added 1.2 million more vehicles to the cruise control recall. Now included are:

  • 1994 to 2002 F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks
  • 200 to 2002 Ford Excursions
  • 1994 to 1996 Econoline vans
  • 1996 to 2002 E-450 vans
  • 1998 Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers

Also, in autozone.com can find electrical wiring diagrams about speed control, check it.

I have two 2003 corollas that neither cruise control will work even though the green cruise light comes on

Check the cruise servo under the hood...usually on the driver side of the car...there should be a cable that either comes from the throttlebody or comes out of the firewall and connects to the servo..most are vacuum operated and the diaphragm becomes brittle and leaks air over time.

2003 oldsmobile alero v6 -- cruise control stopped working...The cruise on/of button lights up, the green light cruise indicator comes on in the dash panel, but cruise control does not engage when CST SET...

Try checking the small switch at the top of the brake pedal. There may be two one for brake lights and one for the cruise control. To ascertain what is what, pull one wire off and see if brake lights work. If not, then the other switch controls the cruise control disconnect and engage..I you have a DC test light check to see if power is on on both side of the switch with brake pedal up. If so, depress pedal and check power on the other side there should be none, if there is the switch is defective.

How to fix cruise control

Cruise controls can cease to engage if the clutch or brake light cruise switch are out of adjustment. If this happens, try placing you foot under the clutch pedal (if equipped) and lift up on it (toward you) and hold it while engaging the cruise. If it now works, it will likely cut out when you remove your foot from under the pedal. Check the brake pedal in an identical fashion. Adjusting the switch at the pedals can often solve he problem. Some vehicles (Honda, Acura, Ford, to name a few) have a plastic insert that mounts in the pedal arm which presses against the switch. These can become brittle and fracture into pieces. My Acura has little pieces of blue plastic on the floorboard around the brake pedal one afternoon and I noticed the cruise didn't work. It was the pieces of the insert that had come to pieces preventing the cruise from coming on. I replaced the insert and no more problem with the cruise.

Check the speed control deactivation switch on the master cylinder. disconnect and use a jumper wire to connect the wires together. If the cruise works it's the switch.

You may have a faulty brake lamp switch at the brake pedal. If the brake lights come on (via a bad switch), the cruise will cut off.
