Do not ignore. The cat. does more than just emissions. The computer takes readings through sensors to find out how to mix fuel ect. Make sure you have a reliable auto center hook into system to get an accurate assesment.

I have a 99 chevy lumina 3.1 engine it starts up great but it smell of fumes from exhaust pipes after a while it cuts off

The problem you describe is almost certainly a bad/stopped-up catalytic converter. Not fuel line, not trunk seals, not head gasket or anything else. The fuel line answer is just wrong. If your catalytic converter is bad or stopped up, you will also almost certainly need to replace the Oxygen sensor as well.

You didn't say it smells like rotten eggs or sulfur, but that is the most commonly-stated description...it isn't accurate; a bad converter smells like a bad converter. Most people find the odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur. A clogged exhaust system will shut an engine off after a short time due to backpressure and excessive temperature buildup.

Your check engine light should also be on. Read any diagnostic codes the PCM has set. I'm fairly sure your problem is the catalytic converter...

I have a 99 chevy lumina 3.1 v-6 there is a censer behind the catalytic converter, check engine light stays on, car acceleration is sluggish as a strong odor.

The sensor is the oxygen sensor and it has a lifespan based on mileage and that is around 60,000 miles. If they go bad you have the driveability issues that you are talking about. But if the catalytic converter is bad too then it makes it worse.

Car starts and then immediately shuts off

When you say "bad smell in the air" can you describe it? A rotten smell odor is usually associated with a bad catalytic converter.

Has it been losing power, slowing going up hills, or anything noticeable?

It may be a bad or clogged catalytic converter. Check the oil level in the vehicle. Overfilling can have adverse effects on the catalytic converter and cause premature failure..

Took my 2003 Toyota 4runner in because engine light was coming on intermittently. That has happened before. Also complained of sulpher smell twice. the first time car was 6moths old...they said changed...

No it is not under emissions warranty the year is what is the factor, it is 7 years or 70,000 mile whichever comes first. You need the check engine fault code read and that fixed first, it is most likely the cause of the smell from the catalytic converter which is caused by a overly rich fuel air mixture. The fact you smelled the sulfur indicates the Cat is working. I was a certified repair and inspection technician for the Calif smog control program for 35 years.

Loud exhaust check engine light on

if it is loud ,,sounds like exhaust manifold gasket or a hole in your muffler or bad catalytic converter ...if it smells like rotten eggs ..catalytic converter or converters ,,some cars have 2 front and back converters

I have lost of power and there is smoke and a burning smell coming from under the car from the catalytic converter area...

if it comes from the catalytic converter area it must be a bad converter. because if the converter goes bad it will heat up and you will loose power to engine. it like blocks the flow of exhaust, if light is on on dash, have it scanned to find problem code. it may also be the 02 sensor in front of converter. if light is not on, then it is more likely the converter is bad. any auto parts store will scan for free.

Catalytic converter cleaned out

HI. it will be best to just replace this damaged catalytic converter device. The converter is damages and, it should be replaced.

Here are some additional issues that will produce this smell as well. Check each area for faults that are listed below before you replace the CAT.

1. Check the Oxygen Sensor(s) for damaged or faulty circuits.
2. Check the Timing Specs. Your vehicles ignition timing may be incorrect.
3. Check the PCV Valve. This valve may be plugged or, damaged.
4. Check the Hose at the PCV valve. This hose could have collapsed or, it may be clogged as well.

Replace the Catalytic Converter if all above is in good condition.

Hi, Sounds like the catalytic converter is shot. It needs to go to the shop to have it checked. Best of luck to you!
