Bad wiper switch or bad parking mecanism in the wiper motor asm. Switch is most likely. You can pull the wiper fuse so you can drive the car until it's repaired.

WDA/Z88 The rear wiper is controlled based on an input from the rear wiper/washer portion of the multifunction switch. When closed, the wiper ON and wiper DELAY switches provide a unique voltage signal to the rear window wiper motor indicating the desired speed. Each switch has a unique resistor that drops the voltage to a specified value which is interpreted by the rear window wiper motor as ON or DELAY. The rear wiper motor receives B+ voltage from the I/P fuse block and accessory voltage from the body control module (BCM).
W49 The rear wiper is controlled based on an input from the rear wiper/washer switch. When closed, the wiper ON switch provides a voltage signal to the rear window wiper motor indicating rear wiper operation is requested. The rear wiper motor receives B+ voltage from the I/P fuse block and accessory voltage from the body control module (BCM).

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector X1 at the multifunction switch.
  2. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 4 and ground.

    If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, refer to Power Mode Mismatch.

  4. Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector at the multifunction switch. Disconnect the harness connector at the rear window wiper motor.
  5. Test for less than 20 ohms between the ground circuit terminal B and ground.

    If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

Why do my wipers and radio work with my key turned back but not with key on?


It's possible that the electrical switch (aka ignition switch) and/or tail piece of the lock cylinder is faulty. With the key on, check to see if they will work when applying slight turning pressure to the key. Not enough pressure to turn the engine off or engage the starter, but just enough to move it from the switches detent.

Sounds like it could be a bad ignition switch-the electrical part, not the lock cylinder. When key is in the on position (run), those fuses should be powered. Are all the maxi-fuses good? They distribute power throughout the car's electrical circuits-like the fuse panel, for instance, so check the maxi-fuses. If good, probably the ignition switch is bad.

I would suspect you have a defective ignition starter switch, this is the main switch the the ignition key cylinder operates and it powers up the while electrical system,. It is under the steering column covers.

You probably lost the ground. I would check the connection with the switch on and don't forget to check the fuse. I would invest on a repair book for your Toyota. Check AutoZone parts store for one.

Eg wipers work while ignition switched to 'accessories' but stop when key turned to 'start'

I had this issue and took me ages and ages of wire tracing and probing. Your fuse box should have the wiper/windows accessories fuses. If you probe them and they aren't showing voltage, check wiring harness, check wiper motor voltage. My ignition barrel was the fault of all this, everything worked when switched to "accessories", but while the engine was running, the accessories turned off. The bottom of the ignition barrel pushed out, as the factory stopper groove bent out. All I did was cold chisel a dent back into the case. BAM fixed my windows/starting/wipers all in one go.

When I turn on the vehicle the headlights and windshield wipers come on and won't turn off. When I turn the key off there is a delay before it actually turns off and the headlights won't turn off.


This sounds like an issue with your ignition switch. Basically what is happening here is that you are shutting off your vehicle, but the ignition switch is not working correctly and is allowing certain accessories to stay on.

most likely you have a very bad ignition switch, the only other pathway for switched acc. to operate when key is off is if someone has had the wires feeding the fuse box crossed. so unless you had recent wiring done by an amature, you need and ignition switch. after replaceing you may still need to replace some fuses or bulbs that didn't like being powered at the wrong time.
