Question about 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

1 Answer

I have a 91 cutlass cierra and sometimes it idles fast and then cuts out on me, even tries to cut out while going down the highway. Sometimes I have to have my foot on the brake and accelerator so it doesn't die on me. someone mentioned the idle air solenoid, but where is this on the car, as I've never heard of it before? Thanks.

Any more ideas on what a person might look for with this problem?

  • Marilyn Tavenner Apr 27, 2010

Any more ideas on this for us to try. We have changed the pvc valve, cleaned the idle air control valve and the throttle position sensor. The main problem at the moment is a super high idle. We did not put a new idle air control valve on this car, but any ideas on what else could cause a high idle that we haven't checked? Thanks for any help.

Have a look for broken vacumn lines ..this causes air to bypass the idle air control solenoid/motor..and this will also cause the exact symptoms you are concerned about..also the pcv valve stuck open will do this as well..start the car if it will stay running long enough and look under the hood and listen for the vacumn leak some times you can hear it and you can locate it this way as well..good luck

If it tends to cut off when no gas given but sometimes idles up very fast & then slows back down, probably the idle air control valve. If so, will have to be replaced to fix.

Kia Rio cutting off

im assuming that changed the oil unit you mean sending unit ? if so could be electric short in the pick tail or worse wiring harness. second there is also possoble vacum leak .third while unit was being replaced something didnt get put back or got knocked loose. created a new problem. most times as thing are going bad they dont register until it is a prolonged problem as it took 2 days for the check engine to go out that also might have been normal. you might also notice while sitting at park when you turn the wheel you will notice ia differance in the idle, if its almost stalling then its probley your idle, needs re set, or your idle controle valve is going bad ,did it get checked or cleaned when they serviced the throttle body. and also could be your mass air flow sensor going bad or need cleaned

My '96 cutlass cierra idles for 30 minutes and then cuts off; i have to wait for about 5 minutes before i can start it again. it's not a fuel pump issue. i have replaced the module and the crankshaft...

Hi,

Have you had the coil check yet?

Also get your fuel pressure regulator tested or check fuel flow/pressure.

This sounds as if the coil is getting hot causing it to cut out, also check your spark plugs are in good condition, if they are worn too much they also will cause the coil to overheat.

Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason

I had an oldsmodbile that did the same thing and it was a vacuum hose problem. You need to check all your vacuum hoses for leaks and the connections.
