Question about 1997 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee. My issue is with the interior instrument lights, none of them work. I checked ALL fuses inside and out of the vehicle and all tested GOOD. Guages work and Radio display works but, guages do NOT light up, Radio buttons, AC/Heat Controls, Shift Indicator, and 4X4 Indicators do not light up. I know it's probably an electrical wiring issue but, thought I would post the question to see if there was an easy fix that I was overlooking.

Yes. I checked the panel in the cabin and the one in the engine compartment. ALL fuses checked out GOOD. I had assumed it was a wiring problem but, hoped there was an easy fix. I've installed aftermarket OLED guages to fix that problem but, the Radio and other components still have no illumination at night. I know where everything is so it really isn't a issue but, would still like to fix it soon. The local garage wants $80 an hour just to poke around and that's not saying their going to fix it either.

I'll double check the fuses tomorrow. I did check ALL the fuses and all tested GOOD at the time, that was almost a year ago though. When everything was working my 4X4 Indicator light burnt out. I replaced the bulb and that's when EVERYTHING else went out.

slc1990: Not sure if we are having the same issue. My lights and dimmer switch both function. The Radio display, which is the only thing that lighst up, will dim when I turn on the parking lights.

Try back probing the actual fuse for the lights. 1side should not have power and the other should. I accidentally posted a solution instead of clarification request when i sent the breakdown for the fuse box. I don't know if we will be able to go back and forth anymore. So if not I hope this helps. If the power thing checks out it could possible be the body control modual. Not really sure though. If you know anybody with a scanner they could check to see if the computer is getting the signal to turn lights on.

I found a breakdown for the fuse box. Looks like 12, 14. Also tied in with other things check out and see if this helps.http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Elec...

Do you have a manual to see which fuse is for the interior lights. That way you can see if there is power in the fuse box going to the lights.

Did you check all fuse boxes? There is one under the hood along with the on under the dash.

It is the headlight switch, very common problem on jeeps, my 96 grand cherokee dose the same but most times the lights will flicker. Try spraying a small amount of WD-40 in to the panel dimmer switch and then move it around and kind of jiggle it around.

1997 jeep grand cherokee interior light fuse. Where is it so I can take it out because my interior lights are staying on and going to drain my battery.

Hey there,
Sounds like you may have a bad switch at the door or in the dash on-off switch.
You could also remove the light bulb for a quickie, otherwise the interior light fuse should be in the fuse box: The older vehicles it was under the left side of the dash at the drivers seat (interior of car). Newer vehicles, it would be (typically) in the engine compartment near the drivers side fender wall.
Best regards
Ck

Well if your battery and fuses check out fine the next thing i would suggest would be to make sure all your battery cables are good and snug, both at the battery side, and the vehicle side.

1997 Jeep Cherokee dash and taillights not working

I'm going to suggest you check two things.

The first, obvious, thing to check would be both fuse panels. One in the vehicle, the second under the hood, and SHOULD be located in a box, near the battery.

Secondly, look for any ground that may have broken free, or the ends may be corroded.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

If that many things went out at the same time its most likely a fuse issue. There are usually 2 fuse panels in the Jeep - one under the hood and one by the steering column. Check the proper fuses to see if they blew out and replace if needed.
