2004 Kia Sedona shows the engine symbol and the manual says something about fuel. We just got the vehicle recently with no warranty. Can you tell us what the problem might be.

All late model cars are computerized and every little glitch turns on the generic "check engine" light. Dealers love this because they can charge you (usually about $100) to read the diagnostic code and then charge you again to fix the problem. Take your money to an auto parts store and buy a low cost OBD-II code reader for about that same amount - you can use it forever. Plug it into the diagnostic port (usually located under the steering column but could be anywhere within 1 metre), turn the ignition to ON (not START) and read the code(s). Make note of the code(s) and then go to to find out what caused the code to be set. Your OBD-II reader can also reset the codes. Sometimes that's all it takes and if it doesn't re-occur, no repair is necessary, which brings me to your fuel comment - one of the most common causes of a check engine light is simply not tightening the gas cap until it clicks. That fools the computer into thinking there is a problem with the fuel vapor recovery system, commonly shown by a P0440 code (evaporative emission system malfunction). Hope that helps!

Check engine light

Check engine light comes on when the computer detects a problem. Your car is OBD II and you need an OBD II scanner to retrieve the code(s). The code(s) will tell you the problem and from there you can figure out the proper fix. Some auto parts stores will retrieve the codes for free,

Where do you plug in the code reader on 1995 aurora?

First of all, it's located below the steering wheel underneath the dash.
If it was late 1995 the OBD-II may be on the vehicle, but I think not. Usually '96 and above can be read by an OBD-II scanner.

OBD-I also had a connector in the same place, but uses a different scan tool.

good luck in reading codes.

What kind of code reader should I buy for a 1995 Pontiac Trans Sport car?

May depend on manufacturer date. All domestic vehicles after 96 are OBD II.Some late production 95 models are OBD II. if your diagnostic connector is rounded oval shape its OBD II. If the diagnostic connector is rectangled it's OBD.

How do you retrieve codes from 1990 ford taurus gl without dianostic computer. trying to help niece with car she bought. she can't afford to take into shop

You can buy a cheap dongle (less then $40 -- (at Canadian Tire, and I think Walmart) where it'll tell you what error code is activated and then you can erase all codes along with a few other options, nice to have if you use it a lot. Otherwise the shop is the next place (Unless you know someone with an OBD II reader -- which is a more deluxe version then what I was explaining previously)
You can DIY for $6 using

Engine light is on

The check engine light illuminates to tell you a problem exists. It also triggers a trouble code. You need to get the vehicle's trouble codes read using an OBD-II code reader. Without that it's just guessing ;-) Post back when you get the codes or look them up at
