SOUNDS AS IF MAYBE ONE OR TWO THINGD GOING ON, 1 the block could be craked ,2, radiator could be clogged .3head could be bad, first you need to find out if the is combustion in the coolant system, the is a kit you can bye called a BLOCK TESTER KIT you can pick this up at local parts store (napa has it ) and read and follow instructions, that will tell you alot there if its internal or cooant related

you have a GM common problem and that is a bad intake manifold gasket. GM change the gaskets to plastic and they crank and leak causing over heating. here is a picture of one i took from a 2005 pon. bonneville with 74,000 miles on it2_12_2013_3_00_09_am.jpg

If you haven't replaced the thermostat yet, try that next.

My 99 grand am is idling fast and slipping?

i think you have an air leak with this new gasket you fitted that would make the engine run faster as its running very week and drwing secondery air , witch is why you have low presher,, the thumping you get when you put the car in gear is becouse its ticking over too fast it could brake a drive shaft if you dont sort the manyfold gasket out soon, check all the bolts around the intake are tight first, but my gess is its leaking badly

I would highly suggest going to an auto parts store and getting a Chiltons or a Clymer repair manual specific to your vehicle. It will have step by step instructions including photo references that would help out a lot. I have used them in the past to change the intake gasket on one of my vehicles. Might cost $30 but that would only be about 1/3 hour in auto shop repair rates and then you have it for reference for other jobs.

Good Luck.

Are you sure it needs a head gasket? These are common for just having leaking intake gaskets and that is alot easier and cheaper to fix.

That is an intake backfire, meaning you have the valve timing wrong. Not quite sure right now on what it should be but check timing belt position and valve timing gear positions.
