Question about 2002 GMC Envoy XL

I have an Envoy I feel theres something very wrong

I feel theres something very wrong with the drive other than the bad tie rod i have. I have a humming sound and when I accellerate the hum gets louder(tires are fine) but when I turn a sharp left I feel like I have a flat tire or the car catching to the left, any Ideas?

I have a 2008 Infinity QX-56 and it shakes terribly when I apply the brakes when driving at highway speeds. It also feels like the suspension is bad when you go over a bump or hit a pot-hole.


Warped brake rotor usually cause high vibration at high speeds. But you can also feel it at lower speeds. But bad ball joints and tie rod end will cause vibration at high speeds. Ball joints will pop at pot holes, sometimes. Tie rods can be felt in the steering wheel at a stop. Move the wheel slightly to the left and right, you can feel/hear a tap as you turn it.

How do you know when your tie rod is bad


if your checking the tie rod ends. jack up that side, and move tire side to side. if it moves tie rod is bad. to check for bad ball joints, move tire from top and bottom. and if it is bad you will feel it in your steering wheel.

1991 ford tempo front end shakes, has a loose rod that runs in to the main drive system


Sounds like the tie rod is bad. Easyest way to tell is to jack up car on that side until tire is off the ground. tie rod end will pivot from side to side,this is normal but if it moves up and down this would indicate that it is bad. If it is please replace as soon as you can for this is very dangerous. If it would come apart you would lose control of car..Now replacing it is not that hard of a job. First remove pin that runs through bolt on bottom of tie rod. Then remove nut. Now the tie rod end has splines on it that holds it into place and just trying to pull it out doesnt work. Place something like large screwdriver or pry bar between tie rod end and where in goes into assemble. Now while prying down use a hammer and hit the side of assemble where tie rod bolt goes through. may have to hit it quite hard and remember keep prying down while you do this. It will simply pop up out of assembly. Please do not hit bottom of bolt to try to pop it out for this in alot of cases will smash end of bolt and cause it to flare out making it hard to pull out once loose. Now that it is out you will need to take it loose from the arm. Use a pair of vise grips of pipe wrench to hold arm and loosen set nut behind tie rod end and screw tie rod out. replace with new one ,tighten nut,put tie rod end into hole but on nut and tighten then be sure to put pin through bolt,may have to turn nut to line it pin up with hole. When pin is through bend it out around nut. The pin is what keeps the nut from coming loose...Hey your done...Anytime you replace a tie rod end you will need to have your car realined.......please rate this post and good luck and hope the info is helpful

Steering wheel movement


Could be your tie rods coming out of the rack and pinion and attached to the wheels. Grasp the tie rod near where it attaches to the wheel and see if you can shake, twist or move it. If you feel any play or looseness at all in the tie rod joint, then it is worn badly. Both outer tie rods at each wheel should be replaced. If the outer tie rods are tight, you can't move them with your hands, then have a shop check your inner tie rods for wear. Have them check the ball joints for wear, also. Or you can raise the wheel off the ground. Be safety conscious. Grab the tire at top and bottom. Can the tire move in and out, feel play in the lower ball joints? Any side to side play in the wheel? Maybe you can spot the looseness at the tie rod or balljoint. Maybe you'd better let a shop look at it.
A CV joint wouldn't have those symptoms. A wheel bearing possibly, but usually accompanied by a grinding noise. Have it checked out.

What you describe is most often caused by a bad tie-rod end, which is part of your steering. This causes the clunking that you feel when you turn, and the tire wear.
Jack up the front drivers side and when the wheel is off the ground, try to force it left and right. If you feel any play in it, a tie rod end is bad.
To find out if it is the inner or outer tie rod end, look underneath and locate the tie rod for that wheel- it will look like a pole about an inch thick. Get somebody to move the wheel left and right like you did, and look on either end of the tie rod for which end is moving. That will be your bad tie rod end. The "outer" is the one by the wheel- the other one is the "inner". Most often it is the outer tie rod end that goes bad.
It is important to get a bad tie rod end replaced as soon as possible because it can separate and cause you to lose control of your car when the wheel will suddenly turn either in or out, depending on which way you are steering when it fails. After a tie rod end is replaced, your car will need an alignment to set the adjustment correctly. If you are changing it yourself, mark how far the old one is threaded in so your alignment will be fairly close to where it was.

Could be a ball joint , tie rod , bad tire or wheel bearing. That's pretty much everything. Unless its front wheel drive? Then a CV joint can be added to the list :)

2002 ford escape tie rod squeaks


My outer tie rod did the same thing when just out of warranty. I could tell it was "bad" by putting my hand on the tie rod while someone else turned the steering a little and I could easily feel the vibration.
Check the other side to feel the difference. Tie rods don't cost that much, if you can replace it yourself, and take a chance on foregoing the wheel alignment. Maybe a $150? job at the shop.
In my case, a tie rod was not readily available. I verified that it was a good joint; no shake or rattle. Then I squirted a little WD40 inside the boot, and put it back together. 70,000 miles later, the new tie rod is still on my shelf waiting for the squeak to return.

my envoy was doing this too, i went all through my brakes and it still did it, i noticed a bad tie rod end and after i changed it and had an alignment done i dont hear it anymore, so check tie rod ends for play and also check the sway bar end links

I have a 2000 Dodge neon, and I need a Passenger side front inner tie rod. How do I know if mine is a firm feel steering or non firm feel, because those are the two different types of tie rods I can choose...


This is the 1st time I heard of 2 being available! You learn something new every day. I checked and there are 2 as you say,
1. Firm feel steering inner tie rod is 293.7mm long, or 11.563 (11-1/2") inches
2. Standard feel steering inner tie rod is 274mm long or 10.7874 (10-3/4") inches long. Remove yours (count the # of turns to remove, replace new end with same # of turns to get the adjustment close and you should get a front end alignment after doing any front end work) and measure it. That's the best way to determine what you need, the 'firm feel' is about 3/4 inch longer than the 'standard feel'. Let me know how it goes.
