Question about 2000 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

VW Sharan (2000model) - Recoding Keys

Got original VW keys from dealership as had lost one. My wife went to get keys recoded today but they could not do it. The dealership now wants £140/hr to diagnose the problem!! So they charge me £125 for 2 basic transponder keys and now cannot recode. What could the problem be? and is there a cheaper alternative to using them at £140/hr?

Also, instead of a recode can I just set the new keys with the existing code?

What is annoying is that I don't even think they checked to see if the new keys were faulty.

Any help would be great.

Thanks Lawrence

Thanks for the response. I bought the keys because I had lost one and only had one left. So I took the opportunity to get some spares made.

They ordered the keys. I did not know they were automatically cut and when they arrived they could not code the keys. They cited a problem with the car system and said that they would need at least an hour to diagnose but could not gurantee how long they may need. My concern was their vagueness. I have managed to find an independant specialist in NW london who will try to recode and then do diagnostic for £70 an hour, which is half the price of the £140 VW wanted. And also coding is only £35 if this is all it needs. So I am a bit happier so far.

Hi Firstly, I would get back on to the dealer and ask them why they have sold you 2 keys if they had diagnosed incorrectly? Did they say you needed these keys? If they did and it has not fixed the problem then raise the point with them, its not your fault that they where wrong, you should not have to pay if the car was not fixed. Secondly there are many places you can get this done, what I cannot understand is why they cannot do it, can you clarify? I have the number of a company that recode keys, I am not 100% they can do vw's but If you want the number to give them a try please let me know. Im not sure where abouts you are in the country but they might do a postal service for you, worth an ask! What was the issue with the car where you need new keys? Was there any previous fault you could detail? Does the car drive at present? or even start? Please give as much detail as possible, and include your postcode or area and I will see if I can find a recoder near you. Have the garage mentioned the fuel pump or anything along them lines? Regards Dan

How do you program a 2003 passat volkswagen key

There is no easy way to program these keys without VAG-COM (Volkswagen Audi Group Communication) software. It is possible that a European specialty car parts house or a locksmith may have this software (or a VW enthusiast who uses it to check specialty fault codes and engine diagnostics), but most people are forced to go to a VW or Audi dealer (same technology) to get new keys matched to their VWs.
When adding a new key, all keys must be recoded at the same time--you can't simply add one to an existing group of keys. A new code is generated that will invalidate the previous codes used by existing keys.
I have had good luck purchasing key blanks and remote key fobs on eBay for much less than my local dealer would charge, but I then paid the $80 fee to have the dealership match all my keys to the car. My local locksmiths could could copy the physical key, but they couldn't do this final step.
There are some tricks you can use with older (pre-2000?) VWs to match up keys, but I do not believe that they work with newer VW key technology.

Nissan Xterra won't start with new key

Try contacting Nissan. On some vehicles there is a procedure for recoding the antitheft computer. This is when you get a key with a computer chip. Tell them you do not have a second key to start the recoding process. The owners manual may give you a procedure for making a copy of the original but it requires a second original key to do it.
