Question about 1997 GMC Jimmy

Transmission only has 2nd and 3rd gears after vehicle warms up. When you stop and cut off ignition and restart it it will shift fine upshifting but then goes back to the limp mode with 2nd and 3rd gears only. 1997 GMC Jimmy, 4.3ltr engine w/ automatic trans.

Check the modulator on the trany, make sure it is not shorting out, check the connections on solenoid.

Do you mean upshifting starts way early? Going from 2nd to 3rd in other words?
Ireally don't know your transmission,but the alternator problem might've possibly spiked and hurt your shifting solenoids in the ******. don-ohio (:^)

Trans starts out fine, will upshift to 2nd while in OD position but will begin to slip at about 30-35 mph. From that point it will upshift if gear shift is placed in 2 position. Doesn't seem to go past...


well,whoever did the transmission needs to look at it again.It sounds like a solenoid problem internally in the transmission.or a plug,wiring,or vacuum leak

If tranny fluid is clear and at normal level, then the issue is with the transmission - it is getting ready to go sayonara.

Better get that fix before you get stranded.

My 1994 Voyager does not want to upshift. It stays in 2nd gear. I used to be able to let it warm up, turn it off, restart it and it would shift. It is now stuck and will not go into 3rd gear. It seems this...


The solenoid for upshifting to higher gears is likeley to be bad. The VSS or speed sensor can be tested by driving the vehicle and observing the speedometer representing accurate speed.

This sensor is used for shift points as well.

I think the transmission needs to be flushed and filled for about $100 or so at shop that does this service.

If that does not solve the problem, a rebuild or replacement transmission will be necessary to fix the problem, if you plan on keeping the car.

Warming it up to get it to shift gives me hope that maybe changing the fluid will help, but can't guarantee it will solve the problem completely.

Transmission must be torn down and rebuilt, in my experience.

The transmission is hanging up in 2nd gear and not shifting to 3rd, 4th etc. It does not downshift to 1st when the car comes to a stop. I can manually downshift to 1st, upshift to 2nd, but it will not...


The absence of 3rd and 4th is imposed by the transmission computer as a precautionary measure. The system has detected fault and rather than risk doing any greater damage has provided a limp home service. It needs to have a transmission specialist look it over and read the error codes. How do your transmission fluid levels look?

SUBJECT: Shift Quality Issues due to B4 Servo Cover Failure, 2-3 upshift harshness or flare
CHASSIS: These chassis breaks are approximate:
S60: 062000-152000
V70: 116000-230000
V70 XC: 036000-067100
TRANSMISSION SERIAL NUMBER: The first 3 digits of the serial number on the affected transmissions will be between 01C (March 2001) and 01L (December 2001).
DESCRIPTION:
In the AW 55-50, brake number four (B4), is only applied in 3rd gear. The B4 is applied by a piston, which is covered by an aluminum cap. This cap has a steel washer crimped to its inside surface, and a rubber cushion that sits between the cover and the washer.
If this washer breaks free from the crimps it will become concaved because of the B4 piston return spring pressure.
This loose washer can cause: - " 2-3 upshift flare / slip - " Harsh 2-3 upshifts - " 3-4 upshift flare / slip - " Harsh 4-3 downshifts
Replacing the broken B4 cover with a new one (PN 30651771) will remedy these symptoms.
