92 camry transmission wont go into gear

I have a 92 Camry with the V6 automatic . 138k on car. tranny was rebuilt 2 years ago and was working fine. the other day I moved the transmission selector out of park into reverse-nothing happened then into drive again nothing happened..wont engage at all. fluid is full and good. linkage is good too!! no noises at all in the past or present. Is this a pump problem or shift solenoid or what? what is most likely the issue? thanks

I'm not sure what to think here. Are you sure the gear selector cable is actually moving the gear on the transmission? They had to take the transmission out as well, so I might be curious if the nut on the gear shift cable on the transmission was good and tight. Pop open the hood and have someone move the gear shifter through all the gears as you look at the transmission, can you see the cable move? If the cable IS moving correctly ALL the time then you might have an internal transmission problem. Reverse gear is usually the first gear to show a problem when something inside the transmission is broken or worn. I'm assuming you checked the fluid level in the transmission already.

Of course, if you move the cable like I suggested above. when the problem is not happening, the cable will seem to move correctly. You might have to try that idea next time the problem arises or try and tighten the hold down nut just as a precaution.

Since this vehicle was abused to the point where the engine was blown up, I can only imagine what kind of trauma the transmission went through.

Hope helps with this.

It could be two things that is causing this problem. It could be that the filter or strainer on the oil pickup is blocked or the oil pump which is driven by the torque converter, is faulty. I suggest that this work should be carried out by a Transmission repair shop

, i have a 1994 toyota camry 4 cylinder automatic, i bought the car with transmission problems, didnt go into reverse but was drivable forward except

that is internal transmission problems, the tranny will need to be rebuilt or replace and no other way around it. you should be able to locate one from a junk yard to ebay.

92 toyota camry 5speed

it sounds like you ground the spacers between the gears. have a look under the gear shift. pull the gear shift off then look at the transmission spacers. you will see where the gear shift sits see if some spacers look like the rest.

Gear problem

Hi! chefcato36
I am just guessing but is this an automatic transmission? If the automatic transmission oil / coolent is old or low, the transmission will not work correctly. If the trany fluid is more then 5 years old the oil and filter need to be changed.
