Question about 2003 Saturn ION

1 Answer

The fan motor appears to need to be changed out

My fan has been chirping for some time. It's getting worse and it is evident that the motor asy needs to be swapped out. Originally the motor asy was covered by my comprehensive warranty, but the folks at the Lithia service center all but shot themselves in the head when confronted with my complaint. My warranty has just expired and now I am going to do the change myself. Any help as far as accessing the motor and its removal would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, D.

both fans do not turn on at the same time. one fan is for the AC condensor and the other is for the radiator. A/C turns on one fan, Radiator temp switch turns on the other one. If you have never replaced the thermostat, or done a radiator flush/refill, you should do one now.

Chirping noise at 2000 rpm

An easy way to get a good idea of where the noise is coming from is to use a short peice of wood like a broom handle , hold it to your ear and touch different places around the where the noise seems to come from. If it is in the belt area spray brake clean in small bursts at each pulley noting when the squek quiets or goes away.

When to replace timing chain on 2003 Camry V6?

Replace the timing belt at 90,000 miles.

It will not damage the motor (bend the valves) if it breaks or jumps time

Finally, if you do change the belt, make sure that the water pump is inspected very close for any evidence of coolant seepage at the impeller shaft weep hole. If there is ANY evidence of wetness or leakage, replace the pump then. Easier to change the pump when the belt is off, than to have to do the whole job if the leak gets worse, and, if it leaks down the road, coolant on the timing belt will damage the belt, and you will have to buy a new belt, too. Change the plugs at 90 K miles, too.
