Easiest way right now is to check your fuel pump relay or your injector coil fuse both of them should be under your hood in the fuseblock

You never leave a car running, as it will
overheat the Exhaust Converter
When you run out of fuel, you sometimes
ruin the Fuel Pump
It depends on gas to lubricate it,as strange as it sounds
Check fuel pressure & volume at the motor with a gauge

The muffler blowing up leads me to think the engine is so far out of time the PCM cant correct it.

REally you need to get it to a good mechanic.

Moisture in your ignition system can cause this to happen , start with a cap/rotor and wire replacement. More then likely this will cure your rainy day blues.
