I would say change the thermostat. Make sure it is at least 195 degree.

Our 2000 Ford Expedition only puts out heat after being driven a mile or two even if it has been idling for a long period

when idiling in the winter it doesnt get hot enough until you raise rpms, that gets the motor hot enough to open thermostat so water starts circulating throughout the whole system.

Check the vacuum hoses from the switch to the engine compartment. If you manually operate the heater valve on the firewall (follow the 5/8" hose) you will get heat.

2000 FORD Expedition both heater hoses get warm. gets heat at first then turns cold front and back. I flushed the heater core and didnt get any gunk out. Is this the heatercore or is this the blend door

if the heater hoses are both hot its a blend door actuator, and possably the blend door its self, the way to make sure is to feel around under the dash . feel the black hvac box and if its feels warm then the heater core is good, you will have to remove the dash to replaced the bland door actuator and blend door ,i reccomend you replace both beacause its alot of work to remove the dash so make sure both components are replaced while you are in there

if the heater hoses are hot the only thing it could be is a blend door, if you can hear the door moving its not closing all the way, those are made of plastic and are common to brake at the actuator you will hear the actuator work but it will only partially close and open the door
