I have a 1988 Alfa spider with a non working instrument cluster. Is it true that only the exact same year and month produced cluster will work in an 88?

First why is your cluster dead? If it's one of the circuits, it can probably be fixed. Since you live in CO there are plenty of places around Boulder and Ft Collins who can repair circuits.

So so without knowing more I'd need to trouble shoot why the entire cluster is dead.

Yes harnesses can can be modified. If your car has the mouse type belts you're going to need to trace the circuit that powers the mouse. All things being equal, the '87 and '89 wiring should be similar except for the mouse part. You'll need wiring diagrams for your car and the donor cluster. You can get copies at Alfa BB. You'll need your connectors off your old cluster.

Again in these are electronic circuits and can likely be modified by computer repair or electronic circuit repair shops.

Good luck. Personally I hate the automatic belts.

I have a 2003 RA Rodeo 2.4l petrol. I would like to change the dash cluster to a 6 cyl cluster. Will the wiring including Tacho plug straight in.

no, in most cases.
but to prove that you need both FSM books.
cluster come in many forms. huge.
engine type, trans, 4wd/2wd, doors, ABS, and other factors/
why not say why doing this, so we can be on same page.>?
did you know some parts in the clusters (inside) can be exchanged
between different model and opted cars?
like tacho, and speedo.?

this is usa forum and we dont call gasoline petrol, (all fuel is petrol here) so i know you are outside usa, post in got a USA (calif ) forum
an our cars run different parts, for vast things , including, cluster
and our clusters are MPH, not KPH. and have USA mandated lamps and things.

so by both FSM for your car,
ive done the internal swaps on many clusters, and is the most complex thing on cars, some have 10 clusters for 1 year.

FSM is the factory serviced manual. (per year)

Instrument cluster gauges

Check engine light ,abs , air bag lights etc.... come on when key turned on ?
Fuse IPC/HVAC BATT 10 amp located in the left IP junction block . Do you know where this junction box is ?
Does the heater an A/C work ? If so the fuse isn't the problem .
Speedometer
The speedometer is a road indicator. The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is a permanent magnet generator which is located on the transaxle. The VSS sends an input to the PCM whenever the transaxle differential carrier turns. The PCM then buffers the VSS signal. The PCM transmits the VSS signal to the following components at 4000 pulses/mile through CKT 817:
• The instrument cluster
• The cruise control module
• The radio (uplevel)
The instrument cluster uses the input in order to indicate the vehicle speed on the speedometer.
Instrument Cluster Indicators
The BCM controls the instrument cluster indicators through the SPI serial data communication bus. Refer to Body Control Module System Check in Body Control System.

Need to replace instrument cluster/AC bulbs

Hello, You can obtain a 2004 Ram Factory Service Manual with all of that information available from Promanuals.net. The reason why it may be so important is because right before the removal instructions the service manual has diagnostic instructions to try. There are numerous pages on removing the instrument cluster, and cluster bezel.

(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable. (For Airbag)

(2) Remove the cluster bezel from the instrument
panel. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/
CLUSTER BEZEL - REMOVAL).

(3) Remove the four screws that secure the instrument
cluster to the instrument panel structural support
(Fig. 5).

(4) Pull the instrument cluster rearward far
enough to access and disconnect the instrument
panel wire harness connectors for the cluster from
the connector receptacles on the back of the cluster
housing.

(5) Remove the instrument cluster from the instrument
panel.

Instrument cluster dead

If your replacement cluster is a used cluster, it might have the same problem, which usually is bad solder points where the main connector connects onto the circuit board of the cluster. If you do some internet searches under Caravan instrument cluster solder you should get lots of sources for instructions and photos of the problem. Sometimes the bad solder points are NOT really visible to the eye, so it's best to put a drop of solder on every one of the points where the connector attaches to the board. That fixed mine. If your cluster is brand new, I don't know what to tell you.
