Light should go out by itself once the system runs through a few cycles.

I tried to reset the engine light by disconnecting the battery cable. When I put it back on the car wont start and gage needles are jumping

As I know disconnecting battery cable cannot reset engine light.
Engine light on caused by a fault code remained in the OBD system. You have to clear the fault code to reset engine light.
But before that, I suppose to have your car checked first to make sure there's nothing wrong.

Good luck.

How do i reset the CEL on a 2003 Nissan Sentra, 2.8l...dealership wants to run a diagnostic $$$$$

Disconnecting the battery might reset the check engine light on your car. However, keep in mind the following:

- not all cars will clear the code after disconnecting the battery
- some problems, if not repaired in time may cause a serious damage and more costly repair.
- the radio, if code-protected, may be locked after disconnecting the battery
- the "check engine" light will come back anyway if the problem still exists.

But by all means try disconnecting the battery (for at least 1 minute) first.

How do you reset engine check light on 2004 Subaru Outback?

u can clear/reset the check engine light either with a scan tool, hit clear codes, or u can just disconnect the battery, the scanner clearing method is preferred as disconnecting the battery can cause temporary stalling issues.

Service Engine Soon Light

take it to Autozone or Kragen auto for a free check of the trouble code that turned on the check engine/service engine soon light, then post the result here, there are over 100 diff faults that can turn the light on, most common are O2 sensors and loose gas caps.

2002 kia optima wont pass emissions. check engine light was on, then turned off. how to reset computer

Reseting the cpu will clear the check engine code however it will not fix the problem that caused the check engine light to come on. The most common cause of failing emissions is the O2 Sensor. This sensor will trigger the check engine light when it is failing. The good news is that the Oxygen senser is pretty cheap and is mounted on your exhuast so it is fairly easy to replace yourself. I suggest replacing your O2 sensor the clear the computer by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and leave it disconnected for a few moments, hook up the negative again and it's all clear. Take your car back threw emmisions and you should be all set.

Hope this helps
