Question about 2001 GMC Sierra Crew Cab

1 Answer

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra Pickup that has electronic 4WD that will not engage. If you press the buttons to enter from 2HI to 4HI, 4LO, Etc. the choice of the button changes (lights up) but the truck does not have 4WD engaging or working? I have checked fuses, and they are fine. Could it most likely be the actuator? I am not a mechanic, would it be the transfer case actuator or the front axle actuator? Thanks!

Thanks, but actually the 4WD is activated on the electronic button display as I have used it for the last 5 years, but the 4WD never engages as I can see that the truck can't get through normal snow, back end slides everywhere, acting like a 2WD truck.

    Thanks,
    Derek

Engaging from 2WD - 4HI/Lo requires movement of the vehicle. very low speed under 5mph, push button should engage. the vehicle has to be moving.

2000 chevy suburban stuck in 4 lo anyone out that cant help

Put truck in Neutral while key in run position engine off or on (doesn't matter which). If it's pushbutton 4wd then try hitting 4low again. if that doesn't work some of the chevy trucks required you to press 4hi to get into 4high and then press 4hi again to get back to 2hi, unless yours has a 2hi button. In that case press 4hi to get into 4high and then press 2hi to get back to 2wd. either way you need to be in neutral to get out of 4lo. I have shift on the fly (Mechanical Shifter on floorboard for transfer case) on my 1990 Suburban and still have to put it in neutral to get out of 4lo. Good Luck.

My 1997 GMC Sierra lights for 4hi and 4lo blink when i push the 4hi button and then goes back into 2hi. but when i push 4lo it locks in and works fine. I tried changing the 4wd motor on the transfer c

THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR IS ONLY FOR 4WD LOW. That would have never been the problem as soon as you confirmed it shifted into 4wd Low. 2wd and 4 Hi work off of vacuum. You may have one or two issues. A vacuum leak up by the front axle that engages the 4wd HI or the sensors on the transfer case.

How to properly engage and dis-engage 4 wheel drive 0n 1996 gmc sierra

  • Shifting from 2HI to 4HI Press and release the 4HI button. This can be done at any speed, and the front axle will lock automatically.

  • Shifting from 4HI to 2HI Press and release the 2HI button. This can be done at any speed, and the front axle will unlock automatically.

  • To shift from 2HI or 4HI to 4LO, the vehicle must be stopped or moving less than 3 mph with the transmission in NEUTRAL

  • Hope this helps.

Electronic tranfer case switches are not working, what could be the problem? The vehicle is in 2 wheel hi now and when I push the 4 hi button nothing happens...when I start the vehicle, all three switches...

check the trasfercase shift control module and wiring
it's located on the passenger side
remove the carpet thresh hold
remove the kick pannel they are held on by clips
the module is behind the kick pannel
disconnect the module harness and see if it is corroded if so you need to replace the connector and the module
let me know if thats not it but i have done lots

You should be able to put in 4x4 while in drive less than 35mph. Mine had a switch to turn to engage or dis-engage.

My 1996 full size chevrolet tahoe will not go into 4wd.It is the electronic version with the switch on the dash for 2hi, 4lo and 4 hi.Did not use 4wd for a year and went to use it and you can hear transfer...

check the solenoid on the front differential. i had a similar problem. when i would start to engage 4wd low/high and it would blow the fuse. i replaced the front solenoid and fixed my problem.

the solenoid can be found in the right side of the front differential. costs about $100 at local part store and takes 5-10 to changeout with an adjustable wrench.

vacuum leak or vacuum locker solenoid problem. a great way to check for both is to remove both vacuum lines from the solenoid (located on firewall above destributor), and put a connector between them, push the button on the dash and see if it locks in.

My 98 chevy blazer won't shift into 4wd.

Most common problem is the vacuum diaphragm that is so inconviently mounted UNDER the battery tray. The cable that locks in the front diff is attached to it and vacuum pulls it in/out.
