Question about 2008 Chevrolet Colorado 2WD

1 Answer

I have a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado LS. It is a manual and very basic with 60k miles on it now. I have had a problem, that after you let off of the accelerator the truck stays at its current RPMS. This is the case, even without the Cruise Control on. If you are headed downhill - it accelerates. If you put it into Neutral, it revs up to 3000-4500 RPMs. You sometimes can solve it by pulling over and coming to a stop as the engine slowly decreases in RPMS. Or sometimes you can shut off the engine and turn it back on - but neither of those fixes it for certain. Kind of a major safety issue!

    No codes listed yet.

It seems like the truck is doing it intentionally. Even though it happens intermittently, when it does do it - it always acts the exact same way. It feels like it is trying to prevent a low idle, even though the RPMs are already high enough.

It did throw a code today: P0128.

  • daniel385 Feb 09, 2010

The Temperature Sending Unit fixed the P0128; however, the truck still self-accelerates.

We did a complete throttle body cleaning; it seemed to work for about 15 minutes - then it started acting up again, doing the same thing: Accelerating, especially while in Neutral (usually to 2,500 RPM).

The truck was getting hot and the heater was working great; however, the gauge wasn't working right. So hooked up a voltmeter to the sending unit, and it was definitely bad. I replaced the sending unit; reset the code and all works well. That solved 1 of the 2 problems. The 2nd problem is the self-acceleration still. The TB cleaning should have fixed it, but no luck.

  • daniel385 Feb 09, 2010

The sending unit was only sending a temperature limit of about 150 degrees. It mislead the computer to believe that the truck was not reaching 190; even though it was. Once the new sending unit went it, the gauge finally started working again (used to bounce all over the place).

The self-acceleration was a problem before the gauge went hay-wire and is still a problem after the cooling system is back to normal.

Okay. I will replace the thermostat too (sucks, because it is expensive and comes with a complete housing.

That should fix the self-acceleration too?

P0128 ... Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperture Below Thermostat Regulating Temperture)

recommend installing new thermostat, have you noticed like the heater taking longer to get hot, or longer before engine reaches normal operating temperture

  • tim mcgrath Feb 09, 2010

Did you replace the Temperature sending unit {thats for your gauge) code P0128 means bad thermostat not temperature sending unit

  • tim mcgrath Feb 09, 2010

What P0128 means is that the coolant is staying under thermostat regulating which means by coolant staying to low telling computer cold engine causing air by-pass to open as if were cold motor, Put a new thermostat in vehicle

  • tim mcgrath Feb 09, 2010

The computer doesn't use the temperature sending unit at all, does have its own sensor called a "Coolant Temperature Sensor", There is no code for the Temperature Sending Unit, it may have fixed your gauge problem but not code

  • tim mcgrath Feb 09, 2010

I'll bet if you pull thermostat out you will see that it is stuck open, You can always test it by putting it in water and boil water see if opens before boils, i'm sure will fix your problem

Code 0449 on my 06 colorado, check engine light is on. does the part usually go bad at 60k miles? thanks for your time.

not usually but can happen at any time being it is electrical. some times they fail because of the few people want to over fill there tank instead of stopping when pump does. part is about 30.00 about 10 minutes to change and is on the vapor canister or around it.

There is no timing belt. your owners manual has a list of what needs to be done at 60k I would call the dealer then another independent shop. make sure you are comparing quotes evenly.
