It is still just an ordinary automatic transmission the difference is there is a slot at the bottom of the the shifter gate that allows you to push the shift knob from side to side.
So basically when you put the shifter in that posistion its in "D" (Drive) just like any other automatic but while its in that slot pushing it to the "+" side or the "-" side of the slot will change gears up or down accordingly.
The only reason for this set up is to give people who cant drive a stick shift, or dont want to drive a stick shift the ability to feel like they are driving a stick.
It really offers no real benefit to performance.

Sounds like one of the vehicle speed sensors is bad. Either that or ABS unit might have a problem. Auto trans normally use the main speed sensor, but shiftronic/sportronic/etc. usually also use the ABS unit to monitor all 4 wheels to be able to make the best shift possible when you ask it to. So check sensor operation, wires and whatnot, if everything is fine, try to get a friend or someone who can do datalogging from OBD2 port to see if the sensor are being read correctly by the ABS and ECU. If readings in datalog don't seem right and sensors are all good, then you will know the ABS unit or ECU will need replacing.

In a 2013 Hyundai Sonata can you switch the transmission from automatic to shiftronic while the car is moving or does the car have to be stopped in order to switch from automatic to shiftronic? Thank you.

My Sonic will let me switch out of auto while I'm driving, so I imagine yes, you can. If it's something that would cause any major catastrophe, I'm sure they would put a mechanical switch in place to prevent any accidental shifting/changing of the trans.

2011 Hyundai Elantra Sport Mode won't engage

I will be straight with you, this shifttronics transmissions are nothing but problems, no one seems to have perfected them yet, not even Acura, this system is all electric solenoids, sensors and valves, i know it is time consuming at the dealer but i would go straight to them and if you have a warranty make sure you get something in writing for the future as this will be an ongoing problem with this type of transmission. soory for the bad news but hope you have a warranty on the car. good day

Dash Display shows all shift at same time When you place in shiftronic position for manual ,cant tell which gear it's in

same thing happened to me....unfortunately its a computer thing that costs about 1500. available only thru VW dealer. Problem is if you let it go it has the potential to mess up the gear shift permanently..or so the dealer told me!

Transmission problem in 2006 mazda 6

If you have gone to a shop to have your transmission maintained, I would get them on the phone immediately. Foreign cars, especially shiftronic trans. usually use different fluids. If they have put the wrong fluid or forgotten a filter, etc., you may have a destroyed system. Double check with your fluid type and the type inserted in your vehicle.

Automatic transmission with shiftronic periodically when going into Drive goes to D1 or D2 on the console, stuck in low gear. A few days later the issue may go away. Just had the transmission rebuilt in...

dear friend-it looks like you have a dirty valvebody that is sticky,i would say that you can first try a additive to clean the valves and body,if no joy then you will have to remove the valvebody but take special care when stripping it.
