Radiator fan not working.i do not know the problem is the electric motor or the relay

You can wire positive and ground right to the fan motor to see if the fan works.

    Or... see if you have voltage at the wiring that plugs intio the fan, but here you have to short out the wiring from the coolant sensor for the fan.

The fan motors can be wired direct to the battery to test. If good change the relay

Cooling Fan Control 2.0L
The engine cooling fan is a variable speed fan. The engine control module (ECM) controls the fan speed by sending a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to the cooling fan control module. The cooling fan control module varies the voltage drop across the engine cooling fan motor in relation to the PWM signal. The cooling fan speed can be adjusted from 10 percent to 94 percent duty cycle. 94 percent is considered high speed fan.
Cooling Fan Control 2.2L or 2.4L
The engine cooling fan system consists of one cooling fan and one relay. Voltage is supplied to the relay through a fuse. The engine control module (ECM) controls the fan operation by grounding the cool fan relay control circuit. When the cool fan relay is energized, voltage is delivered to the cooling fan motor. The cooling fan motor is grounded through its own ground circuit.
When the request for fan activation is withdrawn, the fan may not turn OFF until the ignition switch is moved to the OFF position or the vehicle speed exceeds approximately 10 mph. This is to prevent the fan from cycling ON and OFF excessively at idle.

The A/C radiator ( condenser ) fan also works by B+ voltage through a fuse an a relay , controlled by the engine electronic control module or PCM - powertrain control module . When you push the A/C turn on button , it sends a signal to the PCM . The PCM will then energize the radiator fan relay turning on the fan . Check fuse in the under hood fuse box , If the fuse is blown you have a electrical short , too much current flow . Plus if the PCM sees too much pressure in the A/C system it will not let the A/C work .

The primary radiator fan does not come on.


Check Maxi fuse #3 60 amp in the under hood electrical center #1 .This is power for the #1 cooling fan . Also check the #1 fan control relay in the same under hood electrical center .
These vehicles use 2 360 mm (14.2 in) cooling fans to aid air flow through the radiator. Electric motors drive the cooling fans. These motors are attached to the radiator. Motor size varies with each engine option.
A coolant temperature switch activates the fan motors. This switch regulates voltage to the cooling fan relay. This switch operates the fan whenever the engine coolant temperature exceeds 110°C (230°F). For location and diagnosis, refer to Electrical Diagnosis. A transducer can also activate the circuit, depending on the A/C compressor head pressure going to the condenser.
The engine cooling fan relays provide the high current required for the cooling fan motors using a low current signal coming from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This signal is a function of various inputs.
Refer to Electrical Diagnosis for further information and diagnosis of the cooling fan relay.

If you look by the Radiator there will be an Electric fan motor. This Radiator fan may have 2 speeds. When the A/C is turned on, it will turn on at least low speed. Otherwise Water Temperature sensors make it work and spin to cool the Radiator.

You need to have this circuit checked. You need to find out if the Electric fan is any good and if both speeds work. The sensors for the fan may not be turning it on or may not be turning it on with High speed. Some Models have a Water Temperature sensor and some have a second sensor just for the Water gauge.
You need to investigate just the part that turns on the Electric Radiator fan.

There may be fuses for the Relays which operate this Radiator fan. The Relay that gets the signal from the sensor may not be working either.

While it sounds like a lot of parts, it makes sense when you know why the parts are there. A Temperature sensor turns on the Relay which has the strength to connect and maintain power to the Electric Radiator fan and operate the multiple speeds. If a fuse breaks, there is a bad part in the system. Just replacing a broken fuse will not fix the bad part.

You need to trace down the bad part and get it off your car. If you already have paid a shop and the car is not fixed, then they should investigate what I am writing to you. Morally, they should continue to test your car for the money you paid to keep it from overheating.

The parts you put on it already will not hurt and could have been part of the problem. Now you need to get the rest of the problem fixed.

Check that the fan is working properly, whether it is electric or a belt driven fan. A car will overheat if the fan doesn't function as originally designed.

Engine light came on and car is over heating. Took it to auto zone and was told it's the fan relay. Its a 2003 PT Cruiser, Turbo. I opened the fuse box under hood. There are 3 spots for relays in there...


Turbo Radiator Fan

The radiator cooling fan is a variable speed electric motor driven fan. The radiator fan assembly includes an electric motor, fan blade, and a support shroud that is attached to the radiator. The radiator fan is serviced as an assembly (fan motor/fan/shroud).

The variable speed radiator fan is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by way of a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal. The duty cycle ranges from 30% for low speed operation then ramps-up to 100% for high-speed operation. This fan control system provides infinitely variable fan speeds, allowing for improved fan noise, A/C performance, better engine cooling, and additional vehicle power.

To control radiator fan operation, the PCM looks at inputs from:

Engine coolant temperature
A/C pressure transducer
Ambient temperature
Vehicle speed
Transmission oil temperature (automatic transmission only

Cooling fan burned up


Get a new fan motor and blade from GM or from an aftermarket supplier.

GM parts are usually better than the aftermarket ones, though for fit and functioin.

May also look into checking the relays and harness. If the terminals of the fan show they are getting current, then the motor will have to be replaced if not turning or obviously burnt.

CAUTION
The fan that draws cool air across the radiator can be driven by either a belt or electricity. Rotating fans can be dangerous. Some are controlled by an automatic switch and can start unexpectedly. When working on electric fans, keep in mind that electric cooling fans should be disconnected when working around them.
When replacing a radiator fan motor, always refer to the vehicle's service manual. The following is a general guide for cooling fan replacement.

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal at the battery. This is necessary on vehicles using electric fans, but some vehicles may require the relocation of the charging system components.
  • Drain the cooling system.
  • Loosen or remove the hose clamps, then remove the upper and lower hoses from the radiator.
  • Disconnect the transmission cooling lines and plug them off, if equipped.
  • Disconnect the electric fan motor connector, if equipped.
  • Remove the fasteners attaching the fan module to the radiator.
  • On some vehicles equipped with air conditioning systems, it may be necessary to discharge the system. This is the case if the radiator and condenser can not be separated in the vehicle.
  • Remove the upper radiator cross member or mounts.
  • Disconnect and plug the air conditioning lines at the condenser, if needed.
  • Remove the radiator and fan module as one unit if possible.
  • Separate the fan module from the radiator.
  • If required, separate the radiator from the condenser.
  • Remove the old fan module.
  • Install the new fan module onto the radiator.
  • Reattach the fasteners attaching the fan module to the radiator.
  • If equipped, connect the electric fan motor connector.
  • Reinstall the radiator.
  • Refill the cooling system.

My radiator fans both have stopped working


Could be a few things. If your fans were just working then just stopped, it could be the fan motor. It could also be the relay. If you know where your lo speed and high speed cooling fan relays are located, you can eliminate this step easily. Take a known working relay (rear defrost or something not essential for starting) and replace the fan relay with the known operational relay while your engine is running and A/C is turned on. If the fans start, there's your problem, if not, then it's probably your fan motors.
Make sure the fuse that protects the fan speed relays is not blown as well.
